Swarthmore's PK Magic Continues! Garnet Advance to Sweet 16

NCAA Bracket

Swarthmore continued its NCAA Tournament run with another triumph in penalty kicks in Sunday's second round, while Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall saw their seasons come to a close.

In Newport News, Va., Swarthmore pulled off the improbable task of upsetting two nationally-ranked teams in penalty kicks on back-to-back nights, elimating host and 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport 0-0 (4-3 in penalty kicks) in the NCAA second round. By advancing past CNU, the Garnet have now reached the NCAA Quarterfinals six times (1974, 1991, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2019) in program history.

Additionally, the Garnet were selected as one of four hosts of Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchups next weekend at Clothier Field. Swarthmore (11-3-5) will face 18th-ranked Connecticut College (12-3-3) in the Sweet 16 on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In Washington, D.C., Connecticut College scored in the 88th minute to knock off CC-champion and third-ranked Johns Hopkins 1-0. The Blue Jays conclude the year at 17-3-1.

In Lancaster, Pa., fourth-ranked F&M suffered a 4-2 defeat in penalty kicks to Montclair State following a 0-0 draw through regulation and two overtimes on Sunday at Tylus Field. Diplomats' season comes to a close at 17-3-1 with the loss.

In Lexington, Va., Gettysburg gave 11th-ranked Washington & Lee all it could handle before falling, 3-2, to the host Generals in the NCAA second round. The Bullets close the year with a record of 12-8-1.
