Melnikov Sweeps Major Awards on All-CC Men's Tennis Team

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore's Michael Melnikov and the Garnet coaching staff swept the major awards to lead the 2023 All-Centennial Men's Tennis Team.

Melnikov was selected as both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, becoming just the second player in conference history to win both major awards in the same season. Johns Hopkins' Mike Buxbaum was the only other player to achieve that feat back in 2014. Melnikov is also just the second Swarthmore player to earn Player of the Year honors, joining former standout Mark Fallati in that elite club. Fallati secured the honor in both 2016 and 2018.

Melnikov wasted little time making his mark at the collegiate level playing at both the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. The freshman owns a 21-1 singles record including a 14-0 mark in dual matches and 8-0 mark against CC competition. Melnikov is 14-6 on the year in doubles, including a perfect 10-0 record with Utham Koduri at the No. 1 spot.

The Swarthmore coaching staff was selected as Coaching Staff of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. Head coach Jason Box and assistants Davis Elkins and Noah Cheng were tabbed by their peers as the staff of the year after leading the Garnet to a 14-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 CC regular season. The award was previously titled Coach of the Year.

Eight players were repeat all-conference honorees, led by Johns Hopkins' Thomas Yu, who became a three-time all-star in both singles and doubles. Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt and Landon Strober, Gettysburg's Mikey Fellman, and Haverford's Andreas Wingert each repeated as All-CC singles picks, while Haverford's Stefan Johnson and Swarthmore's Rushil Patel each secured doubles honors for the second time. Ursinus' Lars Jespersen collected doubles honors this spring after twice previously receiving All-CC honors in singles.

Swarthmore led the way with six players on the All-CC team, followed by Haverford (5), Franklin & Marshall (4), Johns Hopkins (3), Washington College (3), Ursinus (2), and Gettysburg (1).
