Saturday's Women's Hoops Recap

Liz Schultz, Dickinson

What Did We Learn?

  • Johns Hopkins' magic number for clinching the regular-season title and top seed for the Conference tournament is one.
  • Muhlenberg and Ursinus secured playoff berths with victories.
  • Haverford's magic number for gaining its first-ever Centennial tournament berth is one - a win or a loss by Gettysburg and Washington College.

Johns Hopkins 67, Ursinus 46
Despite it being senior day in Goldfarb Gym, it was junior Alex Vassila who led the #22 Johns Hopkins women’s basketball team to a 67-46 victory over Ursinus, Saturday afternoon, in a key Centennial Conference clash. Vassila paced the Blue Jays in scoring with 16 points while pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Chantal Mattiola added 11 points and three assists while Stephanie Fong chipped in eight. Lindsay Teuber led all scoring with 20 points.

Franklin & Marshall 64, Swarthmore 47
An early first half run gave Franklin & Marshall a comfortable lead en route to a 64-47 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats (17-6, 13-4 CC) extended their win streak to five games while the Garnet (8-14, 6-12 CC) dropped their fifth in a row. Allison Bauer paced the Diplomats with game-highs of 19 points and four steals, while Alexa Barbush contributed 18 points. Megan Pauley pulled down eight rebounds and had a game-high three blocks. Elle Larsen led the way for the Garnet with 16 points and seven boards, while Katie Lytle added nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Muhlenberg 66, McDaniel 54
During the Senior Day ceremonies before the Muhlenberg women’s basketball game against McDaniel, senior Kathleen Naddaff said she had trouble catching her breath because she was so emotional.
Luckily for the Mules, they had no such trouble of their own as they used a strong first-half run to open up enough breathing room that they were able to weather a return run by the Green Terror for a 66-54 win that clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs. It’s the seventh straight playoff trip for the Mules (18-5, 13-5), who moved into sole possession of third place in the CC thanks to Ursinus’ loss at first-place Johns Hopkins. They are still one game back of second-place Franklin & Marshall. Alexandra Chili finished with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the fourth double-double of her career. Emma Wingerd and Steph Perez led the Terror with 11 points.

Washington College 58, Gettysburg 50
Senior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) became Washington College's all-time career leader in made free throws as the visiting Shorewomen knocked off host Gettysburg, 58-50, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this afternoon in Gettysburg, PA. The win was the Shorewomen's (14-9, 9-9 Centennial) second-ever road win over the Bullets (11-12, 9-9) and their first since 1996.  Gettysburg had won 10 straight home games over Washington. Tait led all players with 18 points and seven assists and also brought down 11 rebounds in the win. Kelly Mitchell and senior guard Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added 10 points each. Sara Kinsley led Gettysburg with 10 points and game highs of 15 rebounds and six blocked shots. The Shorewomen's only previous road win over the Bullets was a 61-55 triumph on January 27, 1996.

Dickinson 71, Bryn Mawr 29
The Dickinson College women's basketball team rolled to a 71-29 win at Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils were strong out of the gate and never let up, stretching the lead to 33-8 in the first half before a late bucket made the score 33-10 at the break. First-year Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and controlled six rebounds. Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, including seven offensive, and three steals. Nicolette Parmese led Bryn Mawr (0-22, 0-17) with 15 points and eight rebounds.
