McDaniel Stuns #24 Johns Hopkins

Emma Wingerd, McDaniel

McDaniel 76, Johns Hopkins 74
In the waning seconds of a tie game, junior Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) heaved a 27-foot prayer to avoid overtime. Her shot drew nothing but air; however, freshman Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) raced under the basket, grabbed the ball out of the air and scooped it back up and in, lifting McDaniel to a 76-74 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory over No. 24 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Wingerd finished off a full stat line with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots for the Green Terror (10-13, 7-10 CC), who got a team-best 16 points from Rybak. Chantel Mattiola recorded a game-high 21 points to pace the Blue Jays (19-3, 14-3 CC), who entered the game allowing an average of just 48.9 points per game.

Franklin & Marshall 51, Gettysburg 48
Colleen Bott hit a pair of free-throws late in the second half to lift Franklin & Marshall over Gettysburg 51-48 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night. The Diplomats (16-6, 13-4 CC) swept the series between the two squads and have won four straight, while the Bullets (11-11, 9-8 CC) fall for the third game in a row. Elizabeth Snyder paced F&M with a game-high 15 points, while Allison Bauer had an all-around night with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Bullets' Caroline Murphy and Alyssa Oursler each had 10 points a piece with Oursler grabbing nine boards.

Muhlenberg 71, Bryn Mawr 39
On the second-to-last Wednesday of the regular season, both Muhlenberg basketball teams took to the court under very different circumstances, looking to solidify their Centennial Conference playoff chances. The women, playing at home against winless Bryn Mawr, won for the second time in as many days, 71-39. The women have never lost to Bryn Mawr, and it was clear early on that the streak wasn't going to end this time. The Mules scored the first 14 points of the game and led 33-8 with five minutes left in the first half. They shot 57 percent in the first 20 minutes, went into the locker room with a 41-15 lead, and cruised from there. Junior Alita Zabrecky led the team with 14 points in only 13 minutes of playing time, and senior Alexandra Chili added 11.

Washington College 67, Swarthmore 44
Senior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) scored a game-high 17 points and her 1,000th collegiate point as visiting Washington College downed host Swarthmore, 67-44, at Tarble Pavilion in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night.  The Shorewomen improve to 13-9 overall and 8-9 in conference play, while the Garnet drop to 8-13 and 6-11 respectively.  With the 13 wins, the Shorewomen clinch their first winning season since 1998-99, when the squad went 15-9. Latisha Pledger totaled 15 points and a contest-high 11 rebounds for her team-leading 12th double-double of the campaign. Elle Larsen had 15 points to lead the Garnet, while Kayla Mortizky had 10 points.

Ursinus 65, Haverford 52
The Ursinus College women's basketball team came one step closer to clinching a Centennial Conference playoff berth on Wednesday evening by defeating visiting Haverford College by a score of 65-52. The Bears were lead by senior guard Alli Rosati (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) who poured in 13 in the effort while senior guard Kristy George (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) contributed 12.  Senior guard Jen Sroba (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and sophomore guard Diamond Lewis (East Windsor, N.J./Stuart Country Day) each netted 10 for Ursinus.
