Swarthmore College Garnet

Head Coach Renee DeVarney

In her ninth season at the helm, Head Coach Renee DeVarney led the 2012-13 Garnet to one of the best seasons in program history culminating with the ECAC South Championship and an 23-7 record. DeVarney was named the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 4 coach of the year and finalist for DIII national coach of the year. It also marked the first time that a Swarthmore women's basketball team received votes in the Top 25 D3Hoops poll. In March of 2013 Katie Lytle was named Player of the Year by the Centennial Conference; the second player under DeVarney's tutelage to earn this honor. (Kathryn Stockbower in 2009) Since taking the reigns of the Garnet program DeVarney, has seen four players exceed the 1,000-point plateau for their careers. Several players have been named All-Conference and two have earned WBCA All-America Honorable Mention recognition. Recent Swarthmore women's basketball players have included a Rhodes Scholar recipient and a Fulbright Scholar winner. / Coaching Staff

2014 Outlook

The Garnet nearly brought home the program's second Centennial title last season, falling by two points to Gettysburg in the Conference final. Swat will challenge for the championship once again this season, welcoming back Lytle, the Centennial Player of the Year. A third-team preseason All-American, she averages a double-double and also plays outstanding defense. Larsen is an outstanding post player, while Deckard is being counted on for more quality minutes in 2014. Moritzky is the floor general. Jowdy comes off the bench to shoot the three, while Casey will also see time. Swarthmore will be in the hunt for the trophy come February.
