HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Elle
Larsen recorded a double-double in her final collegiate
game as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team recorded a
63-52 upset victory over archrival Haverford on Saturday, Feb. 21
at the Gooding '84 Arena.
Junior Abbey
Deckard set the tone by nailing a 3-pointer on
Swarthmore's first possession, as the visitors led for nearly the
entire contest. After a jumper by Elizabeth Lynch gave the Fords a
brief 6-3 advantage, the Garnet rattled off 18 straight to take
control. Larsen scored seven points during the stretch, which was
capped by a free throw to make it 21-6 with 9:03 left. Haverford
brought the deficit down to single digits and trailed 31-22 at the
break by getting a buzzer-beating jumper from Samantha Wetzel.
Haverford came out strong in the second half and got consecutive
3-pointers from Elizabeth Lynch to knot the game at 32s. Following
two more ties, the Fords took their first lead since the opening
minutes of the game when Anna Schrecengost finished a 3-point play
the old-fashioned way to create a 41-40 score with 10:46 on the
clock.
The Garnet, however, recovered and responded with eight straight
points to move ahead again. Deckard drilled a pair of 3-pointers to
spark the offense before senior Chastity
Hopkins drove in for a layup to make it 52-43 at the 6:42
mark. The hosts came no closer than four points the rest of the
way, as Jessica
Jowdy and Deckard hit free throws down the stretch to ice
the win.
Larsen registered her 12th double-double of the season with 22
points and 10 boards to lead the way for Swarthmore. She also
registered three blocks and two steals. Jowdy contributed 16 points
and nine rebounds, while Deckard netted 13.
Lynch added 16 points and eight rebounds for Haverford (15-10, CC
13-5), which was held to just 28.3 percent shooting from the field.
Jacquelyne Pizzuto recorded 13 points and nine assists.
Swarthmore (10-15, CC 6-12) graduates two seniors and is slated to
return 10 letterwinners and four starters next season.
