Washington College Tops Swarthmore in CC First Round

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host fourth seed Washington College used a 6-0 run during the first half to take control of the game on its way to a 10-6 win over visiting Swarthmore, the fifth seed, on Wednesday at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium in the first round of the Centennial Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament.  The Shorewomen improve to 8-9 overall, while the Garnet finish their season at 9-7.  Washington will move on to play #6 Gettysburg, the tournament's top seed, on Saturday at noon at Gettysburg.

How It Happened
- With the score tied at 1-1, Tobin Chambers picked up the loose ball off of a save and one-timed the rebound into the goal to put the Shorewomen ahead for good at 2-1 with 4:45 left in the first quarter.  Morgan Sutherland would net her second goal of the quarter with 2:52 left to give WC a 3-1 lead after one.
- The Shorewomen opened the second with the first four goals to take a 7-1 lead with 7:21 to go on a Colleen Keefe score from Ashley Devlin.  The six-goal lead was the team's biggest of the afternoon.
- Swarthmore would score the last two goals of the second to cut the lead to 7-3 at halftime as Helena Irvine cut the hosts' lead to four with 90 seconds remaining.
- Each team scored once in the third quarter as Abby Laubach cashed in on a free position with 9:43 left for the hosts before Ashley Pyon answered for the Garnet as the Shorewomen took an 8-4 lead into the fourth.
Ellie Morrall tallied the first goal of the fourth to give the Shorewomen a 9-4 advantage before Swarthmore scored the next two to cut the lead to 9-6 with 2:37 left on a Kyra Hall free position tally.
- Sutherland would finish the scoring with 1:11 remaining on a pass from Devlin.

For The Shorewomen (8-9)
- Scoring: Sutherland (three goals and one assist), Devlin (goal and two assists), Chambers (two goals), Abby Laubach (goal and assist)
- In Goal: Sydney Wingate (60:00, 12 saves, six goals allowed)
Ellie Morrall (three ground balls and three draw controls), Laubach (three draws)
- The Shorewomen outshot the Garnet 30-27, won 10 draws and had nine caused turnovers.
- WC went 17-for-18 in clears, went 2-for-5 in free position shots and picked up 17 ground balls.

For Swarthmore (9-7)
- Scoring: Hall, Irvine, Pyon, Emma Holub, Eleanor Miller and Francesca Richardson (goal)
- In Goal: Helen Stafford (60:00, 12 saves, 10 goals allowed, game-best eight ground balls)
- Irvine (contest-high five draw controls), Miller and Stafford (game-best two caused turnovers)
- The Garnet went 16-for-18 in clears, earned 10 draws and had two less turnovers than WC, 15-13.
- Swarthmore went 2-for-3 in free position chances, totaled 17 ground balls and recorded nine caused turnovers.

Notes
- Washington has topped Swarthmore 10 times in a row and 13 of the past 14 dating back to 2008.
- Today was the Shorewomen's first home conference tournament game since an 11-10 win over McDaniel in 2013.  Washington is now 2-0 all-time in Centennial Conference Tournament contests at home.
- It was the first all-time meeting in the Centennial Tournament between the Shorewomen and Garnet in women's lacrosse.
