The Basics

• The Short Story: 110 minutes were not enough as the Johns Hopkins and McDaniel needed penalty kicks to decide who would advance to tomorrow’s Centennial Conference Finals. In the end, the top seeded Blue Jays defeated the Green Terror 4-3 in PKs to advance to their 16th championship game.
How it Happened
• The first half was all defense as neither team could muster much on the offensive side of the ball. Hopkins was able to get six shots off, however only a shot from Michelle Santangelo was on net. McDaniel took two shots in the first half with only a shot from Megan Henderson finding the net, but Bess Kitzmiller made the save to keep the game scoreless.
• Just 40 seconds into the second half, the Green Terror took the lead as the rebound off a Kirsten Gibson shot was corralled by Katie Kirschenmann who put a shot off the post for the goal at 45:20.
• Almost 20 minutes later at 65:25, Hopkins pull even the score as Toni Abate sent a pass to Riley O’Toole who put the ball past the left side of McDaniel goalkeeper Sarah McDonald.
• In the second overtime period, Maggie Coulson would step up for a penalty kick to win the game, but McDonald made a diving save to keep the game tied. Off the rebound of the save, O’Toole grabbed the loose ball and fired another shot which McDonald made another incredible save on, sending the game into penalty kicks.
• Abby Keen took the first shot for the Green Terror and her shot was saved by Kitzmiller.
• Bailey Monaco scored for JHU and Maddie Schwartz followed with a goal McDaniel.
• Emily Maheras gave Hopkins another goal, but once again the Green Terror got a goal as Kirschenmann put the ball past Kitzmiller.
• A shot from Hallie Horvath found the back of the net, and that was followed a miss from Lindsey Farrell and Maddy Rocks.
• McDaniel got a goal from Kristen Upton, and Kyla Persky, a defender from New Cannan, CT, stepped up with a chance to win the game for Hopkins. She set herself and fired a shot past McDonald to give Johns Hopkins the 4-3 win in penalty kicks.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays advance to the conference finals for the 16th time.
• This is the fifth game that has gone into PKs, and Hopkins improves to 3-2 in those games. The last game that went into PKs for Johns Hopkins was the championship game in 2014, which Hopkins lost to Swarthmore, 5-4. The last JHU win in penalty kicks was in the 2010 semifinals against Haverford, which Hopkins won 3-2.
• Johns Hopkins improves to 10-1-2 as the top seed in the conference tournament, and is 14-0-3 in the semifinal round.
