Cenatiempo Strikes Again in Overtime

Cenatiempo Strikes Again in Overtime

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the second consecutive game, sophomore Charlotte Cenatiempo (Weston, Conn./Weston) found the touch in overtime, sending home the game-winning goal in the 94th minute to lift Gettysburg College past Susquehanna University 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action at Clark Field.

After scoring the game-winner at Muhlenberg College last Saturday and being named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Cenatiempo found herself in the right spot at the right time in Wednesday's match up. Gettysburg (8-4-2) controlled possession early in overtime with senior Jessica Cuttone (Mahwah, N.J./Mahway) firing the extra period's first shot on goal in the 93rd minute.

Less than 60 seconds later, Cuttone set the stage for the winning tally, crossing a pass from the left side into the box. Cenatiempo touched it to her left to beat a defender and slipped a shot right past the goalie for the winning tally 3:26 into the extra session. Gettysburg improved to 3-1-2 in overtime contests this fall.

Despite some early looks at the goal by the hosts, it was Susquehanna (12-3-1), which came in ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region, that struck first. The River Hawks scored on their first offensive opportunity on a corner kick by Emily Lefkowitz in the 15th minute. Lefkowitz's pass into the box was headed by Mairead Ruane in front of the cage and Alyssa Bolger polished off the play with a header into the goal.

Gettysburg tied the match with a header of its own in the 41st minute. Sophomore Tatum Lareau (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) lofted a pass into the box and junior Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) finished in front of the cage. The goal was Esposito's fourth of the year, tying her with Cenatiempo and sophomore Isabell Klatt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) for the team lead.

The Bullets dominated possession of the ball in the second half, out-shooting Susquehanna 9-1 with seven attempts on goal. The Orange and Blue failed to convert, however, as River Hawk goalie Jennifer Thorsheim stopped seven shots in regulation.

Gettysburg finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.

The Bullets head to No. 23 Swarthmore College (11-3, 5-2 CC) this Saturday at 7 p.m.
