Hopkins and Swarthmore Meet in Another Final

BALTIMORE, Pa.—The scoring floodgates opened in the second half for No. 22 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer in Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference Tournament semifinal game against McDaniel College. After going into halftime tied at 1-1, Swarthmore scored four more times en route to a 5-2 win.

With the win, the Garnet (14-2-2) advanced to the Centennial Conference Championship for the second year in a row. They will attempt to defend their 2017 title in Sunday's 1 p.m. contest against top-seeded Johns Hopkins University.

The Garnet, despite holding a 9-4 advantage on shots in the first half, found themselves down in the 21st minute following a goal by the McDaniel Green Terror. Swarthmore evened the count in the 33rd minute when Sophia Stills, who had entered the game just 33 seconds earlier, provided the Garnet the spark they needed off the bench by pushing through the defense and ripping a shot into the top left corner of the goal.

The score held at 1-1 going into the second half, but Swarthmore's Marin McCoy put the Garnet ahead in the 53rd minute with a blast of a shot from the edge of the box that went in for her 10th goal of the year.

McDaniel notched a tying goal in the 66th minute, but the Garnet received a gift from the Green Terror in the 73rd minute. On a restart near midfield, Eleonore Moser drove the free kick into McDaniel's box where a defender misplayed the ball and headed it into the team's own goal.

Up 3-2, the Garnet never looked back. Sophomore Bellara Huang got in on the scoring action with her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute on a nice shot that drifted over the keeper's reach.

Swarthmore capped off its scoring spree in the 90th minute with Brittany Weiderhold tacking on her seventh score of the year.

Swarthmore's defense limited McDaniel to 11 attempts all game, and Amy Shmoys posted four saves in the net for the Garnet.

The Centennial Championship game begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Johns Hopkins University against the top-seeded Blue Jays. In last season's championship meeting at Hopkins, the Garnet beat the Blue Jays in penalty kicks to claim the title.

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team used two first-half goals to defeat Dickinson College, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament.

How it Happened
• Rachel Jackson got the Blue Jays on the board at 13:13 as Mizuho Obayashi sent a pass to Michelle Santangelo who headed the ball into Jackson. Jackson then settled the ball and put a one-touch shot into the right side of the post for the goal.
• Just over a minute later Toni Abate sent a corner kick into Santangelo who settled the ball in the middle of the box and knocked the ball into the right side of the net for the 2-0 lead at 14:41.
• The Red Devils cut the Hopkins lead in half on a free kick by Eryn McDonald from 35 yards out which hooked into the corner of the net at 30:55.
• The Blue Jays had two fantastic chances to go up 3-1 as an Insa Mannstadt shot hit off the top of the post just missing crossing the line and bounced out to a waiting Jackson, who put a shot on goal which was saved by Mary Kate Brosnan.
• Emily Maheras sent a cross into the box to Kristin Hori who then one-touched the ball Obayashi who finished with a shot into the left post at 46:44 for the 3-1 lead.
• Dickinson had a few solid scoring chances; however, the Blue Jay defense held the Red Devils scoreless for the entire second half as JHU claimed the 1-0 win.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays are now 25-3-6 in the conference tournament and sport an 11-1-3 record as the one seed.
• JHU is now 4-0-1 against the Red Devils in the conference tournament.

Inside the Box Score
• Jackson and Santangelo are now tied for the team lead with 27 points. Santangelo has a team-high 12 goals while Jackson now has 11 goals this season.
• Robyn Lipschultz earned the win in net for Hopkins as she made one save and improves to 12-1 on the year.
• JHU outshot Dickinson, 16-4 and took 12 corner kicks compared to one for Dickinson.

• JHU will be in search of its 12th title tomorrow at 1 pm as Hopkins play Swarthmore in a rematch of last year's final.
