Gettysburg Drops Pair at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa.  – The Gettysburg College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, including a Centennial Conference match up with host Muhlenberg College inside Memorial Hall.
 
Gettysburg (18-5, 4-3 CC) fell 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-20) in the opener with Muhlenberg (20-3, 5-1 CC). The Bullets jumped out of the gate to an 8-3 lead, but the Mules rebounded with their own 8-3 run for the first of eight ties in the set. Senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) set the Bullets up for the winning point with a kill, but Muhlenberg ran off the final three points for the win.
 
The Mules did not trail in the second set and held a 16-10 lead in set three. Gettysburg ran off the next seven points with a kill by sophomore Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) putting the team ahead 17-16.
 
Muhlenberg regained control with a four-point run and after the Bullets closed the gap to 22-20, the hosts tallied the final three points to complete the sweep.
 
Higgins tallied 10 kills and Weikert finished with seven. Senior Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) managed 22 assists and a dozen digs.
 
Gettysburg went right into a marathon non-conference match with Clarkson University (11-7). The Bullets won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23, but the Golden Knights overcame the deficit to seize the final three sets 25-20, 25-19, and 15-10.
 
Freshman Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) led the attack with 17 kills and put up 16 digs. Higgins added 14 kills and senior Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) recorded a career-high 13 kills.
 
Blair dished out a season-high 48 assists and tallied 19 digs. Senior Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added 25 digs and a pair of aces, while sophomore Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) put up a dozen digs.
 
Gettysburg returns to action next Friday at Messiah College at 6 p.m.
