COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the sixth straight year, Ursinus
captured the Centennial Conference field hockey championship as the
Bears (18-2) defeated Johns Hopkins (13-6) 6-0 at Eleanor Frost
Snell Alumnae Field Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Ursinus advances to the NCAA Division III tournament
and will find out where and when the Bears are playing late Sunday
night.
Junior midfielder Michelle Wimmer (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had
three goals in the game, while senior forward Jessica Zatwarnicki
(Reading, Pa./Exeter) had a goal and three assists for Ursinus.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead at 16:04 as junior midfielder Megan Yoder
(Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored unassisted off of a
rebound. Wimmer then scored her first goal of the game at 27:15 off
of a corner as Zatwarnicki assisted.
The Wimmer-Zatwarnicki combo scored again just 53 seconds later, as
Wimmer scored off of a corner for a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, senior midfielder Sarah Brant (Collegeville,
Pa./The Hill School) gave Ursinus a 4-0 lead, as she scored on an
assist from sophomore back Nicole Hanby (Bear, Del./William
Penn).
Wimmer’s third and final goal of the game came off of a
corner, and a Zatwarnicki assist, at 62:04.
The final goal of the game was scored by Zatwarnicki with just 30
seconds left, on an assist by Yoder.
The Bears racked up 32 shots, 21 of which were saved by Johns
Hopkins senior goalkeeper Sophia Tieu.
Ursinus senior goalkeeper Erica Scott (Carney’s Point,
N.J./St. Elizabeth) made just one save, as she faced three
shots.
