COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Karen Wendler (Burlington,
NJ/Burlington) scored the game-winning goal in the 18th minute to
lead No. 7 Ursinus over Johns Hopkins 1-0 in the Centennial
Conference (CC) field hockey championship game on Sunday.
Wendler finished a pass from Lindsay Cappa (Oley, PA/Oley Valley)
midway through the first half for the only goal of the game,
helping the Bears (17-3) become only the second team in CC history
to win three straight conference titles.
With the win, Ursinus earned the conferences automatic bid into the
NCAA tournament. The field will be announced Sunday evening with
first-round action beginning on Wednesday.
In the cage, Jess Lamina (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West)
recorded her second consecutive shutout with one save on the
afternoon.
Dayna Eng tallied seven saves for the Blue Jays (13-7).
Hopkins started strong, firing off back-to-back shots in the first
minute, 27 seconds of the game. Nikki Thren (Barto, PA/Upper
Perkiomen) stopped Sarah Bender’s shot with a defensive save,
before Leah Horton had her shot saved by Lamina.
From there, the Bears took control and capitalized on their second
shot for a 1-0 lead at the 17:12. Jennie Moore (Phoenixville,
PA/Phoenixville) sent a scoop pass into the circle to Cappa, who
then dished the ball to her left for Wendler to tap in for the game
winner.
Cappa tried to give Ursinus a 2-0 lead with 5:45 left in the first
half, but Eng made a diving save and deflected the ball with her
stick to keep it 1-0 at intermission.
In the second half, the Bears held an 8-1 advantage in penalty
corners and a 5-0 edge in shots. It is the sixth time in the
seven-year history of the CC tournament that the championship game
was decided by one goal.
