Late Rally For Men's Lacrosse Comes up Short at No. 9 Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – A slow third quarter doomed the Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team against No. 9 Dickinson on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated 14-11 in Centennial Conference action.

 

With the loss, the Bears fall to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in Centennial action. Meanwhile, the Red Devils maintained their unbeaten season by moving to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

 

The Bears forced a turnover on the Red Devils opening possession of the game and cashed in just over thirty seconds later when Stephen Schoenborn scored to give Ursinus an early 1-0 lead at the 13:27-mark. Dickinson evened the score just 50 seconds later on their first shot following a faceoff win and junior Tyler Neal kept the back-and-forth action going at the 10:36-mark by giving the Bears the lead back at 2-1. The Red Devils knotted the game at two at the 6:41-mark following a long possession and took their first lead of the game just under a minute later behind another faceoff win. Ursinus tied the game once more at three after Schoenborn tallied his second goal at the 4:59-mark of the first quarter, but the Red Devils responded to go up 4-3 just two minutes later. Junior Jeremy Calabro got things going for the Bears in the second quarter by tying the game at four at the 13:28-mark before the Red Devils took the lead back just 1:23 later. A Red Devils turnover led to Ursinus tying the game at five as junior Tyler Falco scored his first of the game with 4:47 left in the first half. Dickinson drew a Bears penalty just under a minute later and scored 12 seconds into the man-up to take the lead back once more at 6-5. For the first time all game to that point, the Red Devils went up multiple goals as they took advantage of a Bears turnover to go up 7-5. Neal quickly responded to cut the lead down to one just 18 seconds later, but Dickinson ended the half with one more goal to go up 8-6 into the locker rooms.

 

The late goal kept the momentum going for the Red Devils as they outscored the Bears 4-0 in the third quarter and went up 12-6. Dickinson won all four faceoffs in the quarter and kept Ursinus off the board despite having five turnovers. The Red Devils scored their sixth-straight goal of the game to lead off the fourth quarter and went up 13-6 at the 12:03-mark. Schoenborn broke the Bears scoreless drought at the 10:52-mark which turned into a run for Ursinus in the fourth quarter. Junior Erik Ojert and senior Tommy Reinhart combined for the Bears next four goals to cut the deficit down to 13-11 with just 3:46 left in regulation. However, the Red Devils won the ensuing faceoff and a big scrum led to a pair of Bears penalties, putting Dickinson on the man-up. The Red Devils slammed the door on the Ursinus rally by cashing in near the end of the man-up opportunity to go up 14-11.

 

Ursinus held a slight 45-44 edge in total shots for the game while the Red Devils held the slight edge in shots on goal at 24-23. Dickinson owned a 40-34 advantage in ground balls and an 18-10 edge in faceoff wins. The Red Devils also went 3-of-6 on man-up opportunities as well. Sophomore Bears goalkeeper Jonathan Singer made 10 saves in the full 60 minutes in the loss while Red Devils goalkeeper Chris Brandau earned the win after making 12 saves during the full duration. Schoenborn led the Bears with a team-high four points on three goals and one assist while Matt Thurston paced Dickinson with five goals and one assist.

 

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 13th as they will travel to take on Haverford at 7 p.m.
