Baseball Edged by Rochester in Slugfest

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. - Keegan Stem and Tom Snipes combined for five RBIs for Ursinus on Wednesday afternoon but the Bears fell to Rochester University 14-11 at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  

With the defeat, Ursinus drops to 5-3 overall. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-1 on the season. Both teams will face off again tomorrow for games two and three of the series, starting at 10am. 

Rochester jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. After Aaron Whitley lead off with a double, Colby Cruser brought him off with a single to centerfield. The Bears answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs and held a 2-1 advantage. Jakob Cantor and Stem led off the inning with free passes. Solomon Griffith followed with a single to center, scoring Cantor and Stem advanced to third. In the next at-bat, Tom Snipes reached first via a fielder's choice, scoring Stem. In the second inning, the Bears added two more runs after Stem blasted a two-run homerun to left field and the Bears led 4-1 after two innings.  

Rochester tied the game at four a piece in the fifth after a two-run homerun from Harper Sy. The Bears would regain the lead 7-4, in the bottom half of the inning. Snipes came through with a double, scoring Cantor. After a wild pitch allowed Stem to score, a Matteo Falcone single to left would bring home Snipes to make the score 7-4. The Yellow Jackets exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead 11-7. Sy crushed his second homerun of the game, this one a three-run shot to left center.  

In the seventh inning, sophomore Jared Minnichbach blasted his first home run of the season to make it an 11-8 game. In the eighth, the Bears would add three more runs to make it a 12-11 ball game. Stem connected on a two-run shot to left field and Tim Pyne was hit by a pitch that brought home Minnichbach. Rochester added two more insurance runs in the ninth and Bears were unable to make a comeback in the final frame.  

Each of the top five batters in the Bears lineup had two hits and each collected at least one RBI. Cantor went 2 for 5 at the plate and scored three runs. Stem went 2 for 4 at the dish with three RBIs and four runs scored. Matt Tuley started on the mound for the Bears and went 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs and fanned two Yellow Jackets.  

The Bears will return to action tomorrow against Rochester for a doubleheader starting at 10am.
