Frey, Field Hockey Shut Out Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The stat sheet and peripherals of the No. 10 Ursinus College field hockey team's showdown at Gettysburg indicated a tight battle of Centennial Conference unbeaten that likely went down to the wire – or even the other way.

Thanks to some clinical finishing and a brilliant performance in goal, the actual contest told a different tale, one the Bears didn't need to sweat out.

Gemma Dufoe and Laura Rothschild scored first-quarter goals to stake Ursinus to an early lead, and despite an onslaught from the hosts the rest of the way the Bears never threatened to give it back as Frey racked up 13 saves and got some help from her defense. Ursinus (7-1, 3-0) won its seventh straight game and remained perfect in conference play while denying the Bullets (7-3, 3-1) those same milestones.

The Bears dominated the opening 15 minutes, going ahead 2-0 by the time 11 minutes had passed and tallying seven shots to the Bullets' one. But Gettysburg turned the tables from there, outshooting Ursinus 15-1 over the next two quarters and 20-14 overall. The orange and blue also owned a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners, but were never able to breach the cage as Frey guarded it to perfection.

With Gettysburg pushing to get back in it, Erin Saybolt ended any hopes of a comeback with an insurance tally midway through the fourth quarter.

Dufoe extended her remarkable scoring streak to eight games with an opener five minutes in, punching in the rebound off a Gabriela Howell shot. About five minutes later, Dufoe was denied a second when a Bullet defender blocked her shot away, but Laura Rothschild was right there to deposit the rebound for a 2-0 lead.

Gettysburg dominated the next two quarters, forcing Frey to make nine saves. When one got past her, Erin McIlhenny was there to make her second defensive save of the season. The Bears notched their fourth shutout of the year.

The Bears got back on the front foot in the fourth quarter, and the pressure paid off when Anna Hall dropped a pass off to the left wing for Saybolt, who blasted in her fourth goal of the year for a 3-0 margin.

Frey reached double figures in saves for the third time this season. Howell and Dufoe led the Bears with four shots apiece, while Emma Bertrando had five and Lauren Beccaria three for the home side.

Ursinus has outscored its opponents, 29-4, during its extended winning stretch.

The Bears go for an eighth straight win on October 3, when they tussle with No. 3 TCNJ in a highly anticipated tilt on Snell Field.
