Swarthmore Downs Women's Soccer in OT

Swarthmore, Pa - Ursinus College Women's Soccer (2-8-1) was defeated by a goal in overtime against the Swarthmore Garnet (4-3-2) on Wednesday at Clothier Field Stadium. The Garnet applied most of the offensive pressure early on, but as the first half progressed, the Bears were able to formulate chances of their own.

Ursinus almost found themselves chasing an early deficit when Swarthmore's Kim Kockenmeister hit the crossbar in the 5th minute on a powerful blast. The Ursinus defense continued to hold off Swarthmore's early onslaught in the opening minutes. However, in the 13th minute the Garnet were able to break the ice when a loose ball at the top of the box was drilled home by Anwyn Urquhart.

Ursinus immediately felt the impact of Sophomore Ciara Rago when she was subbed into the game in the 18th minute. Shortly after coming off the bench, Rago scored on a fantastic shot from the top of the box that found the upper left-hand corner of the net. It was Rago's first collegiate marker, and it tied the score 1-1.

The score remained tied at halftime with the Bears leading the Garnet 3-2 in shots on goal but trailing 6-4 in overall shots. Ursinus changed goalies at the half, subbing Mandy Carideo out for Maddie Nau.

The Garnet were the clear aggressors for most of the second half, and the Bears caught some lucky breaks when Swarthmore's Veronica Gibbons hit the crossbar on a shot, and Kim Kockenmeister missed high on two attempts, one of which was a breakaway.

Although the Ursinus defense did an admirable job attempting to stifle the Swarthmore offense, the Bears simply could not seem to get anything going on their attack. With just seconds remaining in the half, Swarthmore hit the crossbar for a third time on a shot by Dani Kaufman-Sedano. The Bears narrowly escaped into overtime with the score still tied 1-1. At the end of regulation, Swarthmore had taken 7 corner kicks compared to 0 for the Bears. The Garnet were also leading Ursinus 18-5 in shots and 5-4 in shots on goal.

With 2:48 remaining in overtime, Kockenmeister was finally able to convert on one of her many chances in the match, slipping the game winning goal into the back of the net and winning the match for Swarthmore.

The Bears will see action next at home Saturday against #5 ranked conference rival Johns Hopkins at 12:00 PM.
