Baseball Downed by Swarthmore, 12-2

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - The Ursinus College baseball team suffered a 12-2 loss to Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action on Friday afternoon from Thomas Field.  

With the loss, the Bears fell to 10-19 overall and 3-7 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Garnet improved to 17-15 on the season and 10-2 in conference action.  

Swarthmore opened the scoring in the second inning after a sacrifice fly scored Matthew Silvestre from third. The Garnet made the score 2-0 in the third after Austin Burgess lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Luke Mutz. In the fifth inning, Swarthmore exploded for four runs and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The biggest hit coming with the bases loaded, Paul Cooke sliced a line drive down the right field line scoring two runs. 

The Bears answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, junior Solomon Griffith drilled a single into left field scoring Matteo Falcone. The Bears rally ended after a 6-3 double play stranded two runners on base. Swarthmore added five more runs in the seventh inning from three hits, a Bears error and a walk.  

Ursinus was able to add a run in the bottom half of the frame after Peter Balos reached first via an infield single. The Bears were able to get two runners on base in the eighth, but a pop out ended the inning. Swarthmore used 14 hits at the plate and 14 strikeouts from the pitching staff to sweep the season series with the Bears. Meanwhile for Ursinus, they mustered five hits on the day and left nine runners on base. The Bears saw eight pitchers touch the mound today as senior Luke Verga highlighted the day pitching two scoreless innings while fanning one batter.  

Ursinus will return to action tomorrow for Senior Day from Thomas Field as they host Dickinson for a Centennial Conference doubleheader starting at noon.
