Women's Lacrosse Held Down by Haverford

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse team fell victim to a big run by a well-oiled Haverford attack and suffered an 18-4 Centennial Conference setback.

Seniors Kaci McNeave and Courtney Cortese found the back of the cage for Ursinus and were joined on the score sheet by junior Haley O'Malley and sophomore Grace Langen.

The Bears (3-11, 2-5) answered the Fords' opening salvo with one of their own, tying the game when senior Bridget Sherry scooped up a loose ball and found classmate Kaci McNeave wide open in front of the cage for a snap shot.

Haverford hit another gear from there, scoring 15 unanswered goals until Ursinus finally ended the run inside the final nine minutes of the second half. The Fords (7-7, 2-5) scored ten more times before halftime, bringing on a running clock on a goal by Callie Crawford with 52 seconds remaining in the period.

The Fords led 16-1 before junior Haley O'Malley nabbed an unassisted goal and sophomore Grace Langen followed with her own marker about 90 seconds later. Senior Courtney Cortese ended the hosts' scoring on a well-placed free-position shot with 2:35 remaining.

The Bears played almost evenly on the draw, collecting 11 to the Fords' 13, but committed seven more turnovers than their opponents (18-11). Haverford was lethal on attack, scoring 18 times on just 28 shots. Senior Kaitlyn France made seven saves, and only three Fords shots failed to hit the target.

Cortese matched senior Emily Blaszkow and sophomore Hannah Reape with three draw controls.

Sherry was all over the field, piling up seven ground balls and causing three turnovers.

The Bears head to Allentown for a matchup with Muhlenberg on Wednesday, April 24.
