Baseball Splits With Suffolk

SANFORD, Fla. – Alex Mumme overtook yet another program record and Will Peiffer maintained his pristine pitching form in the Ursinus College baseball team's Friday split with Suffolk.

Mumme scored two runs in a 9-3 victory in the opener, becoming the all-time leader in that category with 131. Peiffer picked up another victory, going six innings without an earned run to drop his ERA down to 0.50 in three starts.

Jon Moldoff hit a two-run homer – his first of the season – in the first game and had two hits in the nightcap, a 2-1 walk-off victory in eight innings for the Rams.

Game 1

The Rams struck first with an unearned run in the top of the first, but it took the Bears only three batters to level as Dom Fiorentino tripled and Alex Mumme drove him in with a double. Two batters later, Mike Stanziale gave Ursinus the lead for good with a two-run double. Mumme's run was the 130th of his career, the most in program history.

Jon Moldoff's first home run of the year expanded the lead to 5-1 in the third, and the bats weren't done there. Stanziale singled and came around on an RBI double by Jake Supran. A wild pitch ultimately played another run before Jerry Scavone's bases-loaded infield single made it 8-1.

The Bears added another run in the fifth, with Suffolk tallying twice in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Connor Barrett went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and was one of six players with a double for the Bears. Stanziale was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Moldoff scored two runs and drove in two more, and Mumme had two runs and an RBI. Kyle Supran and Jake Supran each ripped a two-bagger, as did rookie Solomon Griffith.

Peiffer continued a strong of terrific performances, allowing just the one unearned run in six lights-out frames. He scattered five hits and struck out four with only one walk.

Game 2

The only blemish against Bears starter Ryan Schwab was an inside-the-park home run by Luke Harder in the bottom of the second, tying the game after Mumme's RBI groundout in the first.

That was all the scoring until the eighth, when the Rams loaded the bases with one out and walked off on a game-winning single by Tim Brigham.

Schwab surrendered just the one hit in 3.2 innings before making way for Casey Fitzsimmons, who cruised through the Suffolk lineup until the eighth. He was charged with the loss giving up a leadoff single, which eventually came around to score on Nolan Graber. Fitzsimmons struck out four and allowed two hits in 3.1 innings.

Moldoff was 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the offense.
