Men's Soccer Falls in Double-OT Marathon

Men's Soccer Falls in Double-OT Marathon

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to visiting Penn State Abington in a double-overtime marathon on Wednesday night.

After nearly two hours worth of lightning delays at halftime and over 110 minutes of soccer, the Nittany Lions (2-2) walked off with a victory on a header with 7:08 remaining in the second extra session. The setback ended Ursinus' bid for its first four-game streak since 2008.

After waiting out a long delay at half, the Bears (3-2) came out firing on all cylinders and grabbed a quick break-through. Aidan O'Malley rattled the crossbar with a rocketed free kick from 30 yards out, and in the 52nd minute Marco Grenda played a perfectly weighted ball down the right flank for Bardol, who slotted home inside the left post for the go-ahead strike.

Misfortune struck in the 70th minute, when a Bear defender misplayed a cross into the back of his own net to give the Nittany Lions an equalizer. Ursinus rang the crossbar twice in the final seven minutes, first on a header by Nate Berger and again on a shot by Tommy Mollis to which the Abington goalie was just able to get his fingertips. All told, the Bears pegged the bar three times in the second half alone.

The sides played out a mostly uneventful first overtime before Brian Schmidt sent a cross into the box for Michael Thomas, who rose high and headed into the top right corner for the golden goal.

In a mostly even first half, the Bears had a couple of solid looks at an opener. O'Malley's sharp header from the center of the box sailed just high on a cross from Kevin Devlin, and Mollis forced a difficult save a few minutes later with a bouncing effort.

Grenda, in fine form on a four-game goal-scoring streak, had a pair of chances to break the ice. Devlin played a nice short ball to the right side of the box and Grenda's rocket shot from in close nearly knocked down the Abington keeper, who just managed to hang on. Then, on a give-and-go with Harry Lorenc, Grenda sent a sliding shot just wide of the net with about 12 minutes to go in the first half.

Just as halftime hit, the teams were forced into the locker rooms due to lightning in the vicinity. After a nearly two-hour wait, they were able to kick off the second half.

Ursinus kicks off Centennial Conference play on Saturday at Gettysburg.

Notes

  • Tyler Lewin made three saves in the first half, the last of which marked the 100th of his career.

  • Grenda's four-game goal streak came to an end, but the assist stretched his points streak to five matches
