Women's Tennis Stays Perfect

ORLANDO, Fla. – Ursinus College women's tennis remains unbeaten after convincing wins over DeSales and Northwestern (Minn.) on Tuesday.

Ava Compagnoni and Daisy Marrero emerged victorious in their collegiate debut at No. 3 doubles for the Bears (5-0), who swept past DeSales before capping the night with an 8-1 triumph under the lights at Lake Cane Tennis Center.

Caitlyn Sorelle and Brenna Trkula powered their way to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles against the Bulldogs, with Cara Freedman and Maddie Russell winning 8-3 at No. 2 shortly thereafter.

Compagnoni and Marrero then provided the highlight of the day, edging out an 8-7 (3) barn-burner at No. 3 to open their collegiate accounts in the most thrilling of fashions.

Russell (6-1, 6-2 at No. 2), Trkula (6-2, 6-1 at No. 3), and Summer Burkholder (6-1, 6-1 at No. 6) were all convincing winners in singles, but the other three courts were hard-fought battles. Sorelle recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory on the top court, and Jessica Leach eked out a pair of tight sets in a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5. Freedman pulled out a close tiebreaker in the second set of a 6-2, 7-6 (5) contest at No. 4 to seal the sweep.

Several close matches dotted the nightcap, but the Bears remained undaunted. They swept doubles, with Burkholder and Madisen Harvey grabbing an 8-3 win at No. 3, Freedman and Russell prevailing 8-4 at No. 2, and Sorelle and Trkula conceding one more game in an 8-5 final at No. 1.

Ursinus is a perfect 15-0 in doubles play this season.

Trkula had no issues dispatching her third singles opponent, posting a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel, but the other five courts were competitive.

Sorelle won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Russell seized a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2. Leach registered a 7-5, 6-1 result at No. 4 and Harvey toughed out a second-set tiebreak to secure a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory on the No. 5 court.

Women's tennis returns to action Thursday morning against Piedmont.
