O'Malley Drives Men's Soccer Past Dickinson

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team was the last of four Bear programs to take the field on Family Day. It sure was worth the wait.

Aidan O'Malley scored a pair of first-half goals, Tyler Lewin saved a penalty kick, and the Bears soared to a 3-0 victory over visiting Dickinson on Saturday night, their first league win since October of 2014.

Jack Schmidt added his first career goal for Ursinus (5-3, 1-1), which improved to 3-1 at home and shook a major monkey off its back with a comprehensive performance.

The Bears grabbed an early lead by cashing in on a miskick by the Dickinson keeper, who hit an attempted clearance off the side of his foot. O'Malley chased it down and fired a left-footed shot from long range into the back of the net, handing Ursinus a lead just five minutes in.

The hosts nearly had a second in the 12th minute, when Marco Grenda played in Schmidt down the right flank. A cross found its way to Kevin Devlin, who put a pass on a platter for Grenda, but the junior's sharp header was right at the Red Devils' netminder.

O'Malley made it 2-0 with 4:59 remaining in the first half, rocketing a free kick from 30 yards out into the top right corner of the net to complete his first career brace.

The Bears all but assured themselves of victory when Grenda played a back pass to Schmidt, who stuck a shot from the center of the box into the bottom left corner for a 3-nil advantage.

Still, there was work to be done to preserve the clean sheet, and Lewin was up to the task. The junior netminder dove to stop a dangerous free kick from just outside the box, then came up with a huge diving save to stone a penalty kick with just under 13 minutes to play. The Bears easily saw out the remaining time to punctuate Lewin's fifth career solo shutout.

Ursinus held a slim 14-13 edge in shots, but put eight of their attempts on target compared to five for Dickinson (0-5, 0-2).

The Bears stay at Patterson Field for a conference date with Swarthmore on Wednesday night.
