Monday Notebook

The biggest story of the week was in men's tennis, as Swarthmore ended Johns Hopkins' 84-match Centennial Conference win streak with a 5-4 triumph at the Mullen Tennis Center. Hop had not lost to a CC opponent since April 20, 2006 against Washington College. Ironically, the Blue Jays ended the Shoremen's 90-match Centennial win streak back on April 2, 2005. The Garnet returned the favor 11 years to the day. Josh Powell provided the clincher at No. 6 singles.

Tip of the cap to Dickinson first-year pitcher Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn. / Glastonbury) who twirled a five-hit shutout in the Red Devils' 5-0 win versus Swarthmore. He fanned 10 in his Conference debut.

Ursinus senior 1B Chris Jablonski (Galloway, N.J. / St. Augustine Prep) hit the 14th home run of his career as the Bears salvaged a split with Gettysburg, winning the nightcap, 12-6. He moved into third place on the UC career RBI chart with 90 and is one shy of the No. 2 spot in round-trippers.

Johns Hopkins senior RHP Carter Burns (Winter Park, Fla. / Winter Park) joined an elite group of pitchers that have started three or more Conference openers when he stepped to the mound vs. Haverford on Saturday. Muhlenberg LHP Phil Cresta '10 holds the record as he started all four Centennial lidlifters in his career.

Ursinus knocked off No. 17 Dickinson, 14-10, in men's lacrosse action as freshman Peter DeSimone (East Greenwich, R.I. / Loomis Chaffee School, Conn.) tallied four goals. It was the fourth straight game that the first-year notched at least four points. It was just the fourth time that Ursinus has defeated a top-20 team, but third in the last two seasons.

Franklin & Marshall earned its first-ever men's lacrosse win in Chestertown as the Diplomats downed Washington College, 11-8. Senior Michael Bossidy (New Canaan, Conn. / New Canaan) led F&M with six goals. The Shoremen had won the previous 23 matchups on the Eastern Shore.

Swarthmore senior Lizzie Kolln (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) notched the 100th goal of her career in the Garnet's 16-5 victory against Bryn Mawr. She scored five times and assisted on six others.

Gettysburg senior Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J. / North Hunterdon) set a program record for career total bases (283) in the Bullets' sweep of Swarthmore. She is 10 base knocks shy of 200 for her career and needs four more RBI to set the program career mark in that category.

Sophomore Emily Sprague (South Burlington, Vt. / Bluffton) pulled out a three-set thriller at No. 5 singles to secure a 5-4 victory for Dickinson against Ursinus in women's tennis. She rallied from a first-set defeat with 6-4, 6-2 wins in the final two sets.

Dickinson's women's track and field squad captured the annual Little Three meet with Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg. Senior Rebecca Race (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) had a great day, winning three events. She crossed the line first in the 800 meters (2:20.62) and the 1500 with a time of 4:46.86. Gettysburg won the team title on the men's side, winning 10 of the 19 eventsIt was Gettysburg's 26th title in the history of the meet, which started in 1947. The Bullets are now tied with F&M for the most first-place finishes. The Bullets showed their depth as the Orange and Blue did not have a multiple individual winner.

Gettysburg sophomore Samantha Sessa (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) shot a 79 to earn medalist honors at the annual Gettysburg Invitational at Hanover CC on Saturday. The Bullets won for the eighth time this season with a 354. It was the eighth career collegiate round in the 70s for Sessa, tying her for the program record.
