CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson College Vice President for Student Life George Stroud has announced that Joel Quattrone (Canisius '82) has been named director of athletics, with an official start date of November 1, 2018. Quattrone was announced as the interim director of athletics in April 2018.
"I am extremely excited to have Joel as our director of athletics," Stroud stated. "Since being named interim director last spring, Joel has proven himself to be a thoughtful leader who has a clear vision for Dickinson College athletics. It is also comforting to know that he has the respect and support of faculty, staff, and alumni. Simply stated, Joel Quattrone is the right person to lead Dickinson College athletics."
Quattrone has served Dickinson for more than 30 years, as senior associate director of athletics, assistant coach and defensive coordinator with the football program, and as an instructor in the physical education department.
"I am very appreciative of the support, and trust provided by President Ensign, and George Stroud throughout my time as interim director of athletics," Quattrone expressed. "I am thankful for this opportunity to serve Dickinson as director of athletics, and I look forward to continuing my association with a remarkable group of dedicated staff members."
After beginning his tenure at Dickinson in 1985, Quattrone has mentored numerous football All-Americans, including two-time Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Eric Dube, in 2006 & 2007. The Red Devils won conference championships 9 times, and also produced the CC Defensive Player of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1998.
As senior associate director of athletics, Quattrone was actively involved in all aspects of department administration. He served as the primary financial officer within athletics.
Since assuming the interim athletic director role in April, the athletic department has thrived under Quattrone's leadership. He is currently overseeing renovations to the women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball locker rooms and team room, and is leading plans for additional renovations and developments of Dickinson's athletic facilities.
Under Quattrone's leadership, the men's lacrosse program won the 2018 Centennial Conference Championship in May. Head coach Dave Webster and the Red Devils returned to the NCAA Elite 8 for the third time in program history. This fall, three Red Devil programs have returned to the Centennial Conference Playoffs. Field Hockey made the program's first playoff appearance under head coach Carly Zinn. Men's soccer returns to the CC Playoffs for the 11th time in 12 seasons, under 15th year head coach Brian Redding, and women's soccer earned a berth under second-year head coach Ted Zingman, for the program's first playoff appearance since 2010. In addition, Eric Herrmann '19 of men's cross country earned a Centennial Conference individual title, and was named Centennial Conference Runner of the Year.
A four-year letter-winner, Quattrone captained the Canisius football team during his senior year, then began his coaching career at Canisius, staying on as a graduate assistant.
"I am confident each of our athletic programs will represent Dickinson in a manner that will bring pride to the institution, and to our alumni," Quattrone said. "I look forward to watching each Red Devil student-athlete grow as a competitor, and as an individual."
Quattrone resides in Carlisle, and has four children. His son Matt played football and now works as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, McDaniel College. His daughter Megan is a senior student-athlete on the McDaniel field hockey and lacrosse teams.
