HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College assured itself of a
seat at the table of the Centennial Conference postseason baseball
tournament with Friday afternoon's 12-5 league win over visiting
Franklin & Marshall College, and in clinching their playoff
berth, the Fords were also able to reach several significant
milestones. With three games still remaining on the schedule,
Haverford (27-6, 12-4 CC) has already equaled the program mark for
most wins in a season after taking down the Diplomats (19-14,
11-5), who entered the game tied with the Fords for second place in
the conference standings. Another milestone achieved Friday was the
exorcising of some home field demons against F&M who last lost
to the Fords at Class of '16 Field in 1999. The win was also the
first at home against the Dips for head coach Dave Beccaria.
Ursinus 15, Swarthmore 0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team
swept the Swarthmore series on Friday, defeating the Garnet by a
15-0 score to improve to 7-9 in league play with one series
remaining. More importantly, the Bears are still alive in the
playoff race and now hold the tie breaker with Swarthmore should
the two teams be tied at the end of the season. The highlight of
the day was the pitching of sophomore lefthander A.J.
Wright (Holland, Pa. / Council Rock South) who held Swarthmore
(17-13, 8-8 Centennial) to just two hits over seven inning of work,
while striking out five and walking three to improve to 2-3. While
scoring 15 runs, the Bears only had eight hits.
Gettysburg 9, McDaniel 0
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior Matt
Karis hurled a sparkling one-hit shutout while Gettysburg
tied season-highs for runs and hits in a 9-0 Centennial Conference
victory at McDaniel College on Friday. It was the second career
shutout for Karis (4-5), who retired 27 of the 30 batters he faced
and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts. Pitching through a
steady light rain, he allowed the first two hitters of the game to
reach base but proceeded to set down 27 of the final 28 batters,
with a fifth-inning hit batsman his only blemish. Ironically,
another Gettysburg pitcher threw a similar game last Friday, when
Ryan
Taylor retired the final 25 batters he faced in a 3-0
loss to Johns Hopkins University. Karis’ other shutout also
came against McDaniel last season in Gettysburg, where he tossed a
weather-shortened, six-inning one-hitter. Gettysburg (11-22, 5-11
CC) banged out 14 hits, with all nine starters hitting safely.
