Friday's Baseball Recap

Jake Chaplin, Haverford

Johns Hopkins 3, Washington College 2
Junior Adam Weiner provided ninth inning fireworks with his first career home run to lift the Johns Hopkins baseball to a 3-2 walk off win over Washington College at the JHU Baseball Diamond, Friday afternoon. With the game tied at two apiece, Weiner came up to the plate with one out and the bases clear. After watching the first strike, the second baseman took two balls before getting a fast ball up in the zone and unloaded on the pitch to drive it over the left field fence for his first home run of his baseball career. Weiner rounded the bases for a walk off home run to lift the Blue Jays to a 3-2 win over the Shoremen. The Blue Jays improved to 22-10-2 on the season and 12-2 in the Centennial while the Shoremen slip to 23-8 and 8-6 in the conference.

Haverford 17, Franklin & Marshall 4
Things continue to click for the Haverford College baseball team as it closed out a season sweep of Franklin & Marshall College with Friday afternoon's 17-4 pounding of the host Diplomats in a Centennial Conference rematch of a Fords win earlier in the week. Haverford (17-16, 9-5 CC) used a 22-hit attack in the win over F&M (16-19, 5-9) which marched six different pitchers to the mound in trying to silence the Fords' bats. As loud as the pings of the bats rang out for the Fords on Friday, the Dips were unable to equal the volume as Haverford starting pitcher Jonny Black had a solid outing to earn the win. Black (3-0) allowed four runs off seven hits and no walks while striking out nine over eight innings of work.

Dickinson 6, Muhlenberg 4
The Dickinson College baseball team tied the school record with its 21st win of the season. The Red Devils set the win mark last spring and swept Muhlenberg with a 6-4 victory here on Friday to match the school record. Andrew Mauro (Washington, D.C./Mercersburg) came on in the sixth inning to earn the win, raising his season record to 6-1 overall. First-year Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) was solid through five innings, recording five strikeouts. Andrew Sterling went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Tyler Rosa' and Steven Haynes each added a pair of hits, a double and an RBI on the day. Brian Beck went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead Muhlenberg (18-18, 2-12 CC).

Gettysburg 15, McDaniel 9

Gettysburg scored the first 12 runs of the game and the Bullets completed a sweep of McDaniel College with a 15-9 Centennial Conference victory on Senior Day Friday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field. The Bullets (19-10, 8-6 CC), who also defeated the Green Terror 7-5 at McDaniel on Tuesday, won their fifth straight game and moved into a three-way tie with Dickinson College and Washington College for third place in the Centennial Conference. Gettysburg and McDaniel entered the game in a three-way tie with Dickinson for fourth in the conference standings. Freshman Cory Karagjozi led Gettysburg's 18-hit attack, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore Nate Simon went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while junior Pat Cody and sophomore Alex Freeman each hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore Drew Felsenthal turned in another solid outing on the mound while earning his fourth consecutive win. Felsenthal (5-1), who defeated conference-leading Johns Hopkins last Friday, blanked the Green Terror over the first six innings before yielding his only three runs in the seventh. He tossed seven innings and allowed five hits and two walks while posting a career-high eight strikeouts and is now 4-0 in conference play.

Ursinus 5, Swarthmore 3
Ursinus put together three runs in the first two innings, then tacked on two more in the seventh as the Bears (15-18, 6-8 Centennial) stayed alive in the Centennial Conference playoff race with a 5-3 win over Swarthmore (19-13, 5-9 Centennial) Friday afternoon. Senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and senior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) each had two hits in the win.
