Saturday's Baseball Recap

Ryan Normoyle, Washington College

Haverford 13-1, Gettysburg 1-3
In a tale of two games, Haverford College and Gettysburg College split a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday at Kannerstein Field as the Fords pounded out a 13-1 victory in Game 1 but the Bullets earned the split with a quiet 3-1 victory in the nightcap. Haverford (18-17, 10-6 CC) remains in second place within the league standings, one game ahead of three teams, including Gettysburg (20-11, 9-7), tied at 9-7 within the conference. Saturday's game began with a brief pre-game ceremony to officially dedicate the baseball facility as Kannerstein Field, in honor of Haverford's beloved former athletic director and head baseball coach, Greg Kannerstein '63, who passed away in 2009.

Swarthmore 13-19, Franklin & Marshall 5-0
As the Class of 2012 played its final games at Clothier Field, the Swarthmore baseball team (21-12, 7-8 CC) showed all of its offensive might on Saturday in a doubleheader pounding of the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats (16-20, 5-10 CC).  The Garnet won the first game 13-5, and followed up with a 19-0 blowout in Game 2. The Garnet were at no loss for hits on Saturday, including sophomore Nicko Burnett's six-hit, six-RBI day, freshman centerfielder Zach Powell's four-hit, six RBI performance in Game 2 and junior Tim Kwilos' three-hit, 4-RBI showing in the first game. Seniors also ruled the day on the mound, as Kyle Crawford threw eight stellar innings in Game 2, allowing no runs and striking out eight, while reliever Adam Hardy earned the win in Game 1 with three and two thirds scoreless.

Washington College 6-9, Dickinson 5-19
Washington College senior shortstop Ryan Normoyle (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) became the fifth player in Centennial Conference history to record 200 hits as Washington College and visiting Dickinson split a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park.  The Shoremen won game one by a 6-5 score, while the Red Devils rallied for a 19-9 victory in game two.  Washington is now 24-9 overall and 9-7 in Centennial play, while Dickinson is now 22-12 and 9-7 respectively. Normoyle recorded his milestone hit in the bottom of the eighth inning in game two of the twinbill on an RBI single through the right side that scored junior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic).  Normoyle, Washington's all-time leader in hits, is the first player from a school other than Johns Hopkins to reach the 200-hit milestone.  He had five hits in the two games.
