Nick Miranda, Haverford
#2 Johns Hopkins 4, Montclair State 3
Sophomore Christopher Casey drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the ninth to guide the #3 Johns Hopkins baseball team past Montclair State, 4-3, in non-conference action Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Blue Jays improved to 28-3 on the season, while the Red Hawks fell to 11-12-1. After 13 consecutive Hopkins batters were retired by Montclair State pitching, junior Mike Denlinger and senior Chris Wilhelm changed the Jays' fortunes by opening the ninth inning with a pair of walks. The runners advanced on a groundout by Ryan Zakszeski, and the Red Hawks intentionally walked Mike Kanen to load the bases and set up the force out. Casey, who entered the game in the seventh, then drew the eventual game-winning walk to score Denlinger. The late-inning drama on the part of the Blue Jays ended an offensive drought for both sides, which combined for just two hits in the final five innings after 11 through four.
Eastern 11, Haverford 9
Nick Miranda scored four times and Sam Kane drove in three runs during Haverford College's game-long rally against visiting Eastern University, but the Fords weren't able to complete the come-back against the Eagles falling 11-9 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday at Kannerstein Field. Haverford out hit the Eagles by a 17-11 count, but all 17 hits by the Fords were singles which wasn't enough to overcome Eastern's four homers.
DeSales 16, Ursinus 7
Ursinus senior designated hitter Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) smacked the first grand slam of his career on Wednesday, but, the Bears (6-21) dropped a 16-7 decision to DeSales (23-8) in non-conference baseball action. Wilson finished 2-for-3 with the grand slam and a run scored, while freshman Sean Pisik (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Freshman first baseman Chris Jablonski (Galloway, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore center Chris Menzies (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) each had two hits.
Messiah 8, Dickinson 7
The Dickinson baseball team took a 7-4 lead on Messiah, but the Falcons battled back to tie, and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon. Bryton Peternal led the Devils at the plate, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Alex Rhoads went 2-for-5 as well with an RBI and a run scored. Brian McCloud singled, reached twice on walks and came in to score three times on the day.
