Friday's Baseball Roundup

Friday's Baseball Roundup

#3 Johns Hopkins 8, Washington College 2
A pair of freshman stepped up when the team needed them most Friday afternoon as pitcher Carter Burns and shortstop Raul Shah helped lead the No. 3 Johns Hopkins baseball team to an 8-2 defeat of Washington College. Burns allowed just one earned run in seven innings and Shah notched his first two collegiate hits as Hopkins (31-5, 13-3 CC) regained a two-game advantage in the Centennial Conference standings heading into the final day. Seniors Ryan Zakszeski and Jeff Lynch also came up big, combining for six hits, four RBIs and two runs. For the Shoremen, senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic), senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) all had two hits as the hosts totaled 11 in the game.

McDaniel 5, Gettysburg 2
McDaniel scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless deadlock and tacked on additional runs in each of the next two innings to defeat Gettysburg 5-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Friday. Pat Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) led the Green Terror (19-15, 8-8 CC) with a 3-for-4 day, adding two RBIs and a run scored while Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) and Marty Windisch (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) added three hits each. David Pisauro (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) did his job, striking out a career-best 11 in 7 2/3 innings of work. James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) shut the door, retiring the final four batters he faced for his first save of the season. Nate Simon and Ben Roessle had a hit and RBI each to pace the Bullets (25-11, 11-5 CC), who had their 10-game winning streak snapped and fell into a second-place tie with Haverford. Pisauro, who fanned eight batters through the first four innings and allowed just one baserunner through five, recorded the second-highest strikeout total of any Green Terror hurler this season with his 11.

Haverford 3, Franklin & Marshall 1
Casey Fox belted a pair of home runs and starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans went eight innings to earn his seventh win of the year without a loss for Haverford College in its 3-1 victory over visiting Franklin & Marshall College on Friday in Centennial Conference baseball action at Kannerstein Field. Bergjans (7-0) fell short of his record-setting, 18-strikeout performance on April 20 in a win against Washington College, but still fanned seven Diplomats on Friday and allowed just the one run off six hits and a walk to earn the victory. Kevin Goff came on in relief to start the ninth and threw a perfect inning to pick up his sixth save of the year, four of which have come in the past four games.

Ursinus 9, Swarthmore 4 (10 innings)
Ursinus sophomore left fielder Chris Menzies went 3-for-5, including a two-run double in the top of the tenth as Ursinus (7-25, 3-13 Centennial) broke open a tie game to defeat Swarthmore (21-15, 9-7 Centennial) 9-4 on Friday afternoon. Menzies joined junior center fielder Josh Schnell with three hits each, while both players along with sophomore right fielder James Hoff all had two RBI in the win. Junior Chris Ryder got the win in relief of senior Steve Berardi. Berardi threw seven innings, striking out five. Ryder pitched the final three, allowing just one hit while fanning three.

Muhlenberg 23, Dickinson 6
John Muha bats at the top of the order, and now he's on top of the hits list. The senior outfielder became the Muhlenberg baseball program's all-time leader in hits when he singled leading off the bottom of the first against Dickinson, breaking the tie he had held with Joshua Carter (1999-2002) since Tuesday. Muha later added another single, finishing the game with 190 career hits, to help the Mules complete a season sweep of the Red Devils with a 23-6 win. Muha lined a 3-1 pitch over the head of the shortstop for the record-breaking hit as the Muhlenberg bench erupted in cheers. The single set the stage for a seven-run first inning, which ultimately led to the Mules (19-17, 7-9) reaching the 20-run mark for the second time this season.
