Jays Advance, Dips Out

Johns Hopkins 15, Penn State-Harrisburg 2
Junior Mike Denlinger (pictured) smashed an eighth-inning home run to start an offensive firestorm and propel the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 15-2 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in its first NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional elimination game. Hopkins will face Ramapo tomorrow afternoon at 1:15 p.m. After giving up a two-run lead in the seventh inning, Denlinger awoke the Hopkins (37-9) dugout with a towering home run over the right field fence to take a 3-2 lead. It was the first home run at PNC Park in the regional tournament, and first of the season for the junior. The homer opened the floodgates for the Jays, as Kyle Neverman promptly followed with a deep triple to left center. Harrisburg brought in lefty Derek Slagle to face the pair of lefties due up for the Jays, but the move backfired as Neverman scored on a passed ball before Mike Kanen and Casey reached base. Adam Weiner made the score 4-2 with his second RBI of the game and Colin McCarthy knocked in Christopher Casey with a sacrifice fly to continue the frame. The inning climaxed with a Ryan Zakszeski two-run double to left field to give Hopkins a 7-2 advantage. The sizzling Blue Jays continued to hum along into ninth, throwing eight runs on the board before the Lions could record a single out.

Misericordia 7, Franklin & Marshall 5
Franklin & Marshall saw its season come to a close in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday afternoon as Misericordia put together a five-run ninth-inning rally to defeat the Diplomats 7-5 on day two of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at PNC Field. Leading 5-2 entering the top of the ninth, the Diplomats (23-21) needed just three outs to advance in the loser's bracket, but the Cougars (37-10) wouldn't go away without a fight as they mounted a furious last-inning comeback to end F&M's season. Misericordia quickly loaded the bases with nobody out behind singles from Ryan Cacchioli and Dylan Mazzo, sandwiched by a walk from Joe Tagliarini. Chris Boroch followed with an RBI single to pull the Cougars within 5-3, before Kyle Lindsay knotted the score at 5-5 with a two-RBI single down the right field line. Steve Sulcoski and Kenny Durling added RBIs to give the Cougars their first lead of the game, 7-5, putting the pressure on the Diplomats in the bottom of the ninth. F&M had opportunities to climb back into the contest in the bottom of the ninth as Matt Mezansky and Kevin Shields opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and Pat Andrews notched a one-out walk to load the bases. Cougar reliever Cory Vogeli tallied consecutive strikeouts to end the contest, however, giving Misericordia the dramatic 7-5 win.
