Bergjans, Hoelzer Earn All-America Honors

ABCA All-America Team / D3baseball.com All-America Team

Senior Tommy Bergjans of the Haverford College baseball team earned an American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-American third team accolade.

It has been a banner week for the pitcher as he was named to the D3baseball.com All-America first team and ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic All-Region on Wednesday. D3baseball.com also selected him to its All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team and All-Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Year on Monday.

Bergjans' senior campaign was spectacular as he had a 5-3 record, 1.07 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings. At press time, the Manhattan Beach, Calif. native is the NCAA Division III leader in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings (14.48). He became the first Ford in program history to strike out over 100 batters in a season and is the Centennial Conference all-time leader in strikeouts. The Fords' pitcher posted eight 10+ strikeout outings and finishes his career with 18 total.

The three-time All-American was also picked to the All-Centennial Conference first team for the third consecutive time, making him the seventh player in conference history to achieve that mark. He also became the first pitcher in the Centennial Conference to ever win the Pitcher of the Year award three seasons in a row.

The right hander graduates as the program's all-time leader in lowest earned run average (1.69), lowest opponent batting average (.195), strikeouts per nine (11.91), wins (27), innings pitched (282.2) and most strikeouts (374).

Bergjans is the first Centennial player to receive ABCA All-America honors twice since Brian Youchak of Johns Hopkins (2008, 2010).

Craig Hoelzer, Johns Hopkins

After leading the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 30-13-1 record, Centennial Conference title and being named Centennial Conference Play of the Year, Craig Hoelzer can now add All-American to his list of accolades this season. The senior from Roanoke, VA was named Honorable Mention All-America by D3Baseball.com.

Hitting in the four spot in all 44 games for the Blue Jays this season, Hoelzer spearheaded the Hopkins offensive attack, leading the conference with a .411 batting average to go along with 72 hits, and 53 RBI. Those numbers, along with his 13 doubles, four homers and two triples led to a .577 slugging percentage and .472 on-base percentage. The 72 hits are tied for 10th in Hopkins single-season history.

Consistency was the name of the game for Hoelzer, who reached base in 39 games while hitting safely in 36, leading to 24 multi-hit games and 15-multi-RBI games. He also had two double-digit hit streaks during the season, and feasted on Centennial Conference pitching, driving in 26 RBI against conference foes as he led the Jays to a 15-4-1 record in conference play.
