Blue Jays Roll Into Regional Finals

Release courtesy of Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications

  • Score: #1 Johns Hopkins- 10, #20 Randolph-Macon- 3
  • Records: JHU (41-4), RMC (32-14)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Romano (10-0), L: Ramos (6-2)
  • The Short Story: The top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team jumped out to a 7-1 lead after four innings and rode a complete-game pitching performance from Gabe Romano to knock off 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon on the second day of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Blue Jays ease into Sunday's title game against the winner of Saturday night's elimination game between the Yellow Jackets and St. John Fisher.

How it Happened

  • Up 2-1 entering the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays provided all the support Romano would need as they punched up five runs to turn the one-run lead into the 7-1 advantage. Junior Jimmy Stevens followed a Caleb Cyr walk with a home run to push the lead to 4-1 and sophomore Dillon Souvignier greeted reliever Connor McAuley by taking his 3-1 offering over the fence in right center to give the Blue Jays the six-run lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, starting the inning off with a home run, double and single to put runners at the corners, with no outs, and a 7-2 score. Romano then walked the next hitter on a full count pitch to load the bases. Romano was able to bear down and get Matt Myers to fly out to right field, which brought in the second run of the inning. Romano then induced an inning ending 4-6-3 doubler play to hold RMC to just two runs in the inning.
  • Johns Hopkins answered with the long ball in the top of the seventh as Tripp Myers left the yard to lead off the inning and Stevens followed it up with his second homer of the day to center field. It was the first multi-homer game for Stevens in his career. Shawn Steuerer sent one out to center field also in the next inning to give the Blue Jays a 10-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
  • Romano found his form in the latter half on the game and did not allow a hit from the sixth inning on to close out a second straight complete game to send JHU to the Regional Championship.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Blue Jays crushed five more home runs in total to push their home run total over the 100 mark. They are two shy of the all-time single season home run record in Division III history, which is 104, set by Wooster in 1997.
  • Romano earned his 10th win of the season to bring his record to 10-0. He is one of just four players in the country to have at least 10 wins without recording a loss.
  • Randolph-Macon had seven hits in total, three of which came from Myles Webb. Carter Johnson's home run was his second of the season.

Up Next

  • Johns Hopkins will play in the regional title game on Sunday at 11 am against either Randolph-Macon or St. John Fisher. Johns Hopkins will claim the regional title with one win on Sunday, while the Macon-Fisher winner will need to defeat the Blue Jays twice to advance to the Super Regional.
