CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- Off the back of a complete game performance from sophomore pitcher Matt Savedoff, the top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team took down Baldwin Wallace, 8-2, to advance to the Division III Baseball Championship Series for the second time in program history.
The bats came out rolling for the the Blue Jays as the first three hitters smoked base hits to the outfield to open the game. Matthew Cooper led things off with a double off the left field wall, followed by back-to-back singles from Dillon Souvignier and Shawn Steuerer to bring Cooper home for the game's first run.
Both teams added a run in the third inning to keep it a one-run game. Cooper roped his second double of the game and eventually came in to score score from third on a wild pitch. Baldwin Wallace pushed across its first run in the bottom of the inning on a Luke Vonderhaar chopping single up the middle. Savedoff settled down for Johns Hopkins and set the next two batters down to strand two runners on base.
Souvignier picked up his second base-hit of the game with two outs in the top of the fifth to bring in another run for JHU. Dylan Whitney led the inning of with a single, then swiped second base to be in scoring position for Souvignier to drive him in and make it 3-1.
Johns Hopkins piled on some more offense in the very next frame after Sam Frank drew a walk and Tripp Myers backed him up with a single to center field. After a wild pitch moved both of them into scoring position. Caleb Cyr stepped up to the dish and snuck a double just inside the left field line on a line drive to plate both runners and give JHU its largest lead of the day of four (5-1).
Dylan Whitney would do the last bit of damage in the top of the eighth with a two RBI double down the left field line. Jimmy Stevens also added a knock to plate a run in the inning to make it 8-1. The Yellow Jackets tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning make it 8-2, but that would be as close as they'd get.
Savedoff finished off his complete game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to send the Blue Jays to the three-game championship series.
