Johns Hopkins Unanimous Pick in Field Hockey Preseason Poll

LANCASTER, Pa. – Johns Hopkins has been unanimously voted the preseason favorite in the 2022 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Preseason Poll. The Blue Jays garnered 10 first-place votes and 100 points via balloting of the conference head coaches.

Ursinus secured second place in the rankings with 89 points, while Franklin & Marshall totaled 76 points to finish in third. Swarthmore received the remaining first-place vote with 62 points. Dickinson (61) and Haverford (57) were projected to finish in fifth and sixth, respectively, while Bryn Mawr (49) claimed seventh place. Gettysburg was selected eighth with 46 points, followed by Washington College (32), Muhlenberg (23), and McDaniel (10).

The 2022 Centennial Conference field hockey season begins Thursday, September 1, with all 11 teams competing in non-conference play, while the first Centennial matchup will take place on Friday, September 23, with Muhlenberg hosting Dickinson. The first round of the conference tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, November 1.

The Blue Jays ran the table last season with a perfect 10-0 conference record (22-1 overall) under Centennial Coach of the Year, Jane Wells. Johns Hopkins won the Centennial field hockey tournament and appeared in the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive season making their first-ever appearance in the national championship game.

Johns Hopkins returns a pair of all-conference players, including first-team midfielder, Abby Birk. In 2021, Birk was named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Region V Player of the Year and earned her second straight All-America honor. Also returning for the Blue Jays is defender Anna Scott (2021 1st team All-CC). Last season, Scott played a key part in the defense that posted a .770 goals against average and 14 shutouts. She was also named SynapseSports All-America and NFHCA first team All-Region.

For the second straight year, the Centennial sent two teams to the NCAA tournament with Ursinus making their 13th overall appearance. Forward Jordan Moore (2021 1st team All-CC) headlines the returners for the Bears. Moore led the Ursinus offense with 14 goals and 31 points last season and for the first time in her career was named an NFHCA All-Region first team honoree.

Eleven All-Centennial performers return to the field this fall, including six who have earned All-Region honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), and one NFHCA All-American. The returners include Bryn Mawr's Maggie Titus (2018 2nd team All-CC, 2021 1st team All-CC, 2021 1st team All-Region), Franklin & Marshall’s Katie Roper (2021 2nd team All-CC, 2021 2nd team All-Region) and Darby Klopp (2019 HM All-CC, 2021 2nd team All-CC), Haverford’s Olivia Ahart (2021 2nd team All-CC), McDaniel’s Reagan Cushman (2021 HM All-CC), Swarthmore's Martina Kampel (2021 HM All-CC), Washington College’s Kate Gromacki (2021 HM All-CC), and CC Rookie of the Year Kat Esposito (2021 2nd team All-CC, 2021 2nd team All-Region).
