Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Jan. 2-8

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The first full week of January featured a number of notable performances around the Centennial Conference, with weekly awards distributed in men's and women's basketball and wrestling. 

Elaina Beckett of McDaniel women's basketball received her second weekly honor of the season, while Vinny DeAngelo of Swarthmore men's basketball and Joey Lamparelli of Muhlenberg wrestling also nabbed weekly awards.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Athlete of the Week
Vinny DeAngelo, Jr., G, Swarthmore
Aston, Pa. | Sun Valley
DeAngelo averaged 27.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in a 2-0 week for the 17th-ranked Garnet. In a double overtime win at Franklin & Marshall, DeAngelo notched his fifth 20-plus point game of the season as he matched a career-high of 33 points along with 11 rebounds for the guard's first career double-double. Earlier in the week, the junior added 22 points while shooting 8-of-13 from the field with a career-best five threes at McDaniel. DeAngelo averaged 4.0 three-pointers per game at a 57.1% clip while also shooting 47.2% from the floor and 81.3% from the free throw line. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Elaina Beckett, Fr., F, McDaniel
Mechanicsburg, Pa. | Trinity
Beckett earned weekly honors for the second time this year after a game-winning shot and averages of 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in a 2-0 week of Centennial play for the Green Terror. Beckett opened the week with a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) and the game-winning shot as time expired at Swarthmore. Deadlocked at 44-44 with time winding down, Beckett rebounded her own miss in the lane with three seconds left and finished the game-winning bucket to give McDaniel the 46-44 road win. The freshman forward closed out the week with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 69-48 home triumph over Muhlenberg. Beckett shot 50% from the floor and 81.8% from the charity stripe during the week.

WRESTLING

Joey Lamparelli, Jr., 125, Muhlenberg
Allentown, N.J. | Allentown
Lamparelli went 6-0 in dominant fashion on the Mules' trip to Iowa, recording two pins, two technical falls and a major decision. Both of his pins came in dual meets. He pinned a Nebraska Wesleyan opponent in a career-best 21 seconds, then flattened his regionally-ranked opponent from Central late in the first period to set the tone as the Mules went on to upset the 11th-ranked Dutch, 21-20. The next day, Lamparelli won the 125-pound Gold bracket at the Central Under Armour Invitational, advancing to the final on two techs and a major before winning his second career title on an injury default.
