Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Dec. 5-11

LANCASTER, Pa. -- With the fall semester winding down, this week will mark the final Centennial Conference weekly awards of 2022 with honors being distributed in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, and wrestling. 

Isaiah Battle of Ursinus men's track & field leads this week's list of honorees following a conference-record-breaking performance in the weight throw. Meanwhile, Adria Retter of Swarthmore women's track & field posted the second-best weight throw mark in CC history. Other stellar performances resulted in conference honors for George Visconti of Swarthmore men's basketball, Kayla Robinson of Haverford women's basketball, James Cruz of Merchant Marine wrestling, Aiden Tomov of Swarthmore men's track & field, and Amy Cantrell of Gettysburg women's track & field.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Athlete of the Week
George Visconti, Sr., G, Swarthmore
Clark, N.J. | Arthur Johnson
Visconti recorded a pair of season-highs with 24 points and 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season in a 84-65 win over Susquehanna. The senior shot 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the field with five assists and no turnovers as the Garnet secured their fifth-straight win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Athlete of the Week
Kayla Robinson, Sr., F, Haverford
Bristol, Conn. | The Taft School
Robinson paced the Fords to a 3-0 week with a trio of double-doubles, averaging 14.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per contest in wins over Cabrini, Bryn Mawr and Alvernia. Robinson leads the nation in double-doubles this season (9) and also leads the nation in offensive rebounds per game while ranking third in the nation for total rebounds. She added 2.7 steals per game while shooting 51.5% from the field. 
 

WRESTLING
 
Athlete of the Week
James Cruz, Sr., 197, Merchant Marine
Belleville, N.J. | St. Peter's Prep
Cruz won the 197-pound bracket at the Nassau Open on Sunday, boasting a 4-0 record with one pin, two technical falls and a win by decision. He earned an opening round win over Kody Edwards of East Stroudsburg by pin in less than a minute. Up next were back-to-back victories for the senior via technical falls over Nassau Community College's Isaiah Lee, 15-0 and Division I wrestler John Dusza of LIU, 16-0. In the first-place match, Cruz narrowly defeated another DI wrestler, Nikolas Miller of Hofstra, with a 10-7 decision to claim the bracket's top spot.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
 
Track Athlete of the Week
Aiden Tomov, Sr., Swarthmore
Havertown, Pa. | Haverford 
Tomov took home first place in the 800-meter run at the Diplomats Open at Franklin & Marshall. The senior won the event with a time of 1:58.77, which ranks first in the conference and 33rd nationally. He was also a member of the second place 4x400m relay for Garnet that finished in 3:37.53. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Isaiah Battle, Sr., Ursinus 
Long Branch, N.J. | Long Branch
Battle set new Centennial Conference and school records in the weight throw with a mark of 17.48 meters at the Bow Tie Invitational on Friday. He topped his own school record of 16.60m from last season and bested the previous CC mark of 17.07m set by Anthony Abbate of Dickinson in 2010. Battle's throw earned him the individual title at the event. 
 

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
 
Track Athlete of the Week
Amy Cantrell, Sr., Gettysburg
Hailey, Idaho | Wood River
Cantrell led the Bullets at the season-opening Diplomat Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall, turning in a program-record time of 3:08.34 to finish second in the 1,000 meters. Cantrell's time ranks third in the nation so far this indoor season. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Adria Retter, Sr., Swarthmore
Quakertown, Pa. | Quakertown
Retter picked up wins in the weight throw (15.97m) and shot put (13.23m) at the Diplomat Open hosted by F&M. Retter set a new personal-best in the weight throw as she narrowly missed a program-record in the event. The mark of 15.97m is second all-time in CC history. The senior currently ranks 13th in the nation for the weight throw and seventh in the shot put.
