Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Feb.6-12

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins' Lauren Phillips put together yet another record-breaking week on the track to headline this week's Centennial Conference awards in basketball and track & field. 

Phillips earned her third straight and fourth overall weekly award of the indoor season. JHU women's indoor track & field teammate Taryn Silvernale also received recognition along with Gavin McElhennon of JHU men's track & field, Ethan Hart of Dickinson men's track & field, Dan Gaines of Muhlenberg men's basketball, Vinny DeAngelo of Swarthmore men's basketball, and Mackenzie Szlosek of Gettysburg women's basketball.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Co-Athlete of the Week
Dan Gaines, Gr., G, Muhlenberg
Colts Neck, N.J. | Colts Neck
Gaines averaged 25.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 60% from the field as the Mules won two games to clinch a Centennial Conference playoff berth. After scoring 15 points in a 71-65 home win against Haverford, he erupted for a career-high 35, the most by a Muhlenberg player in nine years, in an 81-67 win at Franklin & Marshall. Gaines made seven three-pointers, just one short of the school record. For the week, he shot 66.7% from three-point range. The total 50 points last week moved him into the top 10 on Muhlenberg's all-time scoring list.
 
Co-Athlete of the Week
Vinny DeAngelo, Jr., G, Swarthmore
Aston, Pa. | Sun Valley
DeAngelo averaged 25.0 points while shooting 75% from the field in two victories over Ursinus and McDaniel as the Garnet remained atop the Centennial standings. Against Ursinus, the junior scored 28 points, including 26 in the second half, and shot 5-of-6 from three to help propel the No. 10 Garnet to victory over the Bears. He then scored 22 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field against the Green Terror. DeAngelo also chipped in with 2.5 boards and a steal per game. 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Athlete of the Week
Mackenzie Szlosek, So., G, Gettysburg
Holtsville, N.Y. | Sachem East
Szlosek led the Bullets to a critical 2-0 week with conference road wins against two of the top four teams in the standings. Szlosek averaged 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steal per contest. She scored 20 points in a 66-54 road win at Johns Hopkins before tallying 12 in a 70-53 victory at Haverford. She also shot 60% from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line for the week.

Track Athlete of the Week
Gavin McElhennon, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Washington, D.C. | Gonzaga College High
McElhennon broke his own school record in the 3,000-meter run as he clocked in at 8:11.53 at Boston University's David Hemery Invitational. McElhennon's time currently ranks 11th in the nation and shatters his previous Blue Jay record of 8:18.26. It is also the third-best 3K mark in Centennial history. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Ethan Hart, Jr., Dickinson
New Market, Md. | Linganore
Hart repeated as Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new school record in the shot put for the second straight week. At the Blue-White Invitational hosted by F&M, Hart delivered a toss of 15.81 meters, besting his previous record of 15.78. The mark ranks fifth all-time in CC history and 19th nationally this winter.

Phillips put together another record-breaking week, setting new Centennial records in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 4x400 relay at Boston University's David Hemery Invitational. She broke the Centennial record in the 200 with a time of 25:10; the previous record had stood since 2002. She also shattered her previous school and conference record in the 400 with a time of 55.35, besting her previous record time of 56.79. She was also a member of JHU's 4x400-meter relay team that broke the school and conference record with a time of 3:50.56. Her 400 time ranks second in the nation, the 4x400 time is fifth and the 200 time is 18th. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Taryn Silvernale, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Stroudsburg, Pa. | Stroudsburg
Silvernale posted the top high jump mark of the indoor season (1.60m) at the Big Apple Invitational. The mark is currently tied for 40th in the nation. Silvernale also recorded a pole vault of 3.36m, which ranks third in the conference.
