Athletes of the Week: Feb. 27-March 5

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Non-conference play continues for Centennial spring teams, with a number of squads headed on spring break trips this week. Weekly honors were distributed for performances from Feb. 27-March 5 in the sports of baseball, softball, lacrosse and tennis. 

This week's honorees include Matthew Cooper of Johns Hopkins baseball, Joey Sangiulo of Dickinson baseball, Lexie Witmer of Washington College softball, Paige Forry of Gettysburg softball, Ewan Temple of Washington College men's lacrosse, Brighton Lorber of McDaniel men's lacrosse, Lydia Cassilly of Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse, Kendall Gracie of McDaniel women's lacrosse, Jonathan Zhang of Johns Hopkins men's tennis, and Jay Xiao of Johns Hopkins women's tennis.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Matthew Cooper, Sr., INF, Johns Hopkins
Chalfont, Pa. | Delaware
Cooper went a combined 7-for-14 at the dish with two home runs and three RBIs in a 3-0 weekend for the Blue Jays. Cooper started the weekend off going 3-for-6, including crushing a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 11th to give JHU a 5-4 win over Johnson & Wales in game one of a doubleheader. Cooper added to his home run total the next day against top-ranked Salisbury, launching a two-run shot to go with his 3-for-4 day at the plate in the Blue Jays 23-4 win. These were Cooper's third and fourth home runs on the season.

Pitcher of the Week
Joey Sangiulo, Jr., RHP, Dickinson
Fairfield, Conn. | Fairfield-Ludlowe
Sangiulo had two strong games out of the pen for the Red Devils over the week, fanning five batters and allowing just two hits in four combined innings of scoreless work. Sangiuolo took over in a tied game at 10-10 in the top of the ninth against Messiah on Wednesday and gave up a leadoff single before retiring the next three batters prior to the game being called due to darkness. On Sunday against Scranton, he allowed just one hit and struck out three over the final two frames to earn the win in an 11-7 victory. 


SOFTBALL

Player of the Week
Lexie Witmer, Sr., C, Washington College
Drexel Hill, Pa. | Upper Darby
Witmer hit .692 (9-for-13) with three doubles, five RBIs, .714 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage in four games for the Shorewomen. In the team's 9-6 win over Notre Dame (Md.) in game two on Saturday, she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double as her two-run double gave WC an 8-4 lead. In game one versus Notre Dame (Md.), she went 2-for-3 with a run scored in a five-inning 8-0 win. On Wednesday at Marymount in game two, she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and a walk as both of her hits plated a run. In the opener, she went 3-for-4 with an RBI. She registered multiple hits in each game and a double in three of the four games. 

Pitcher of the Week
Paige Forry, So., P, Gettysburg
Reading, Pa. | Schuylkill Valley
Forry won her first two starts for the Bullets on their spring break trip, pitching 15.0 innings with 19 strikeouts and no walks. She went the distance in both contests without allowing a run and scattering just seven hits in a 1-0 win over Albion on Saturday and 4-0 win over Waynesburg on Sunday.


MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Ewan Temple, Sr., A, Washington College
Virginia Beach, Va. | Frank W. Cox
Temple tallied 16 points on eight goals and eight assists in a 2-0 week for the Shoremen. On Saturday in a 22-16 win at Widener, Temple set career-bests in assists (7) and points (12) as he factored into over half of the team's goals, in addition to scoring five goals which tied his personal best. In the decisive 8-3 second quarter, he factored in five of the goals, one goal and four helpers. The 22 goals was the most by a Washington squad since scoring 21 in 2019. He also picked up two ground balls. In Wednesday's 14-11 victory over Elizabethtown, he had team-bests of three goals and four points.

Defensive Player of the Week
Brighton Lorber, Sr., GK, McDaniel
Lutherville, Md. | Loyola Blakefield
Lorber posted three wins with 17 saves, a 65.4 save percentage and 3.47 goals against average last week as McDaniel went 3-0, outscoring its opponents, 38-10. His best performance came on Sunday in a 9-4 win at Montclair State when he had 15 saves and a .789 save percentage as the Green Terror picked up their first road win this season. He also moved into ninth place on the school's career saves list with 440, surpassing Jakob Katzen who totaled 433 from 2017-20. McDaniel has won four-straight, its longest win streak since March 14, 2018, and Lorber is the only goalie to rank in the top five in the Centennial Conference in saves, save percentage and goals-against average.


WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Lydia Cassilly, So., A, Franklin & Marshall
Havre de Grace, Md. | C. Milton Wright
Cassilly scored a combined nine goals and dished out one assist during a 2-0 week for the Diplomats as they defeated No. 13 Messiah and No. 12 York (Pa.). Cassilly scored five goals and had an assist against Messiah before scoring four more against York - including the game-winner during the final five minutes of the contest. The sophomore posted a 56.3 shooting percentage and added three ground balls and one caused turnover to her efforts.

Defensive Player of the Week
Kendall Gracie, Sr., D, McDaniel
St. Johns, Fla. | Creekside
Gracie totaled four ground balls and four caused turnovers as McDaniel won its only game last week, an 11-10 victory over Susquehanna at home. After the Green Terror took the lead with 1:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, she caused a turnover on the River Hawks' ensuing possession and secured the ground ball as McDaniel was able to run out the clock and secure the win. Gracie currently leads the Centennial in both ground balls and caused turnovers this season.


MEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
Jonathan Zhang, Gr., Johns Hopkins
Hong Kong | Diocesan Boys School
Zhang went 2-0 in singles to help Johns Hopkins to wins over No. 8 NC Wesleyan and Washington & Lee. He won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at fifth singles and clinched the Blue Jays' come-from-behind win over the Bishops. JHU trailed 4-2 and came back to win 5-4. Zhang then won 6-4, 7-5 at fourth singles at Washington & Lee.


WOMEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
Jay Xiao, Fr., Johns Hopkins
Chapel Hill, N.C. | East Chapel Hill 
Xiao won both of her matches to lead Johns Hopkins to a 9-0 win at Washington College. She partnered with Kamila Wong to win 8-5 at first doubles. Xiao then won 6-4, 6-1 at first singles.
