Athletes of the Week: Apr. 3-9

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Four repeat honorees lead this week's Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week as we approach mid April for Centennial Conference spring competition. Conference play is heating up in baseball, lacrosse, softball and tennis, while outdoor track & field and golf continue to prep for the CC championships in later April and early May. 

Paige Forry of Gettysburg softball and Lily Macatee of Gettysburg women's lacrosse collected their third weekly awards of 2023 to lead the way this week while Adria Retter of Swarthmore women's track & field and Matthew Cooper of Johns Hopkins baseball each secured awards for the second time this spring. Others who earned honors for superb performances last week included Dan Galef of Franklin & Marshall baseball, Giovanna Komst of Gettysburg softball, Matt Richards and Jacob Abraham of Haverford men's lacrosse, Sam Silverman of Haverford women's lacrosse, James Yu of Johns Hopkins men's tennis, Jenna Harrison of F&M women's tennis, Jamie Moreland of Haverford men's track & field, Ethan Hart of Dickinson men's track & field, and Lauren Phillips of Johns Hopkins women's track & field.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Matthew Cooper, Sr., OF, Johns Hopkins
Chalfont, Pa. | Delaware
Cooper put together a phenomenal week at the plate, finishing 8-for-16 with four homers and six RBIs in a 3-1 week for Johns Hopkins. Cooper homered in three out of four games, including two against Ursinus in game two of a doubleheader which was the fourth multi-homer game of his career. For the week, he posted a 1.438 slugging percentage, had two hits in every game, scored at least once in each game, had at least one extra-base hit in each game, and also drew three walks. Cooper leads the conference in batting average at .459 and is tied for third in the country in home runs with 11. With 23 long balls in his career, Cooper has moved into seventh all-time on the program's career home run list. 

Pitcher of the Week
Dan Galef, So., RHP, Franklin & Marshall
Ossining, N.Y. | Ossining
Galef struck out a career-high eight batters without allowing an earned run in seven innings during the 7-4 victory against McDaniel. The sophomore righthander tossed 104 pitches and allowed just four hits to stay undefeated on the season - picking up his fourth win on the mound this year. 

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week
Giovanna Komst, Jr., OF, Gettysburg
Londonderry, N.H. | Londonderry
Komst led the Bullets to a 4-0 week with conference sweeps over McDaniel and Haverford, including three run-rule wins. She hit .600 on the week, going 6-for-10 at the plate with a double for a .700 slugging percentage. She also drew two walks for a .615 on-base percentage. She added a sacrifice hit and sacrifice fly while scoring six runs and driving in four. 

Pitcher of the Week
Paige Forry, So., LHP, Gettysburg
Reading, Pa. | Skuylkill Valley 
Forry collected Pitcher of the Week accolades for the third time this spring after leading the Bullets with a 3-0 record on the week. She tossed 15 2/3 innings in three conference games, including going the distance in both of her starts. She struck out 17 over the week while allowing just three earned runs for a 1.34 ERA.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Matt Richards, So., A, Haverford 
Middletown, R.I. | St. George's
Richards matched a career-best with five goals and added an assist as Haverford toppled No. 19 Ursinus on Saturday, 14-9. Four of Richards' five goals and his one assist came in the decisive second half as Haverford secured its first ranked win since the 2019 season when they bested both then-No. 10 Ursinus and No. 10 Dickinson.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jacob Abraham, So., GK, Haverford
Tarrytown, N.Y. | Hackley School
Abraham stopped 17 shots, recording a season-best save percentage (65.4%) as the Fords grabbed a huge upset win over No. 19 Ursinus, 14-9. Abraham currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference in save percentage (59.4%).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Sam Silverman, Sr., A, Haverford 
Catonsville, Md. | The Bryn Mawr School
Silverman totaled nine goals and six assists in a 2-0 week for the Fords as they improved to 8-3 on the season and remained unbeaten in Centennial play (4-0). The senior attacker had a standout outing in Wednesday's win 18-10 at Washington College with seven goals and six assists for a program-record 13 points. She then added two more goals in Saturday's 21-9 triumph over McDaniel. Silverman connected on 81.8% of her shots and added four ground balls for the week. Her performance against Washington also pushed her above 100 career points.

Defensive Player of the Week
Lily Macatee, So., D, Gettysburg
Street, Md. | North Harford 
Macatee secured weekly honors for the second time this spring after leading the Bullets to a 2-0 week with 12 draw controls, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls. She had 10 draw controls in the 21-8 win over Dickinson to go with her three caused turnovers and two ground balls. The Bullets' defense allowed just 12 total goals between the two victories. 

MEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
James Yu, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Bellevue, Wash. | Bellevue
Yu helped Johns Hopkins to Centennial wins over Washington College and Haverford in a 2-0 week for the Blue Jays. He went 2-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles. He and brother Thomas lost just one game in their two wins at first doubles, defeating Washington 8-0 and Haverford 8-1. James then did not lose a set in either of his singles wins at the No. 3 spot, securing a 6-2, 6-3 win vs. Washington and a 7-5, 6-0 triumph vs. Haverford. He clinched Hopkins' win over Haverford with his singles win. 


WOMEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
Jenna Harrison, So., Franklin & Marshall
Kingston, Jamaica | Darlington School
Harrison went 2-0 in singles and doubles last week as the Diplomats downed Gettysburg (7-2) and Washington College (8-1) to improve to 4-1 in Centennial play. Harrison picked up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in both matches. Against Gettysburg, she teamed with Clara March Okuyama for an 8-5 doubles win before claiming a 7-6 (3), 7-5 singles win. Against Washington, Harrison and March Okuyama downed their opponents 8-5 and she claimed another win at No. 2 singles. 

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD 

Track Athlete of the Week
Jamie Moreland, Sr., Haverford
Los Angeles, Calif. | Campbell Hall
Moreland posted the top 800 meter time in the Centennial and the 28th-fastest in Division III at the Golden Ram Invitational hosted by West Chester. The senior crossed in 1:53.37 to win the event. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Ethan Hart, Jr., Dickinson
New Market, Md. | Linganore
Hart recorded the third-best shot put mark in Centennial outdoor history at the York College Twilight meet last Wednesday. Hart delivered a toss of 16.27 meters, which ranks 10th on the national list this season. 

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD  

Track Athlete of the Week
Lauren Phillips, So., Johns Hopkins
Mount Laurel, N.J. | Moorestown Friends School
Phillips set a school record in the 200 meters, coming in fourth place out of 49 runners with a time of 25.05 at the Ebanks Invitational. Phillips' time beat her previous time in the event of 25.20 and is the fourth fastest time in conference history. Her time also currently ranks 15th nationally.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Adria Retter, Sr., Swarthmore
Quakertown, Pa. | Quakertown
Retter repeated as Field Athlete of the Week with the second-best marks in conference history in the discus and hammer throw at the Oscar Moore Invitational hosted by Rowan. Retter posted a 49.87-meter mark in the discus, building on her NCAA-leading mark this spring. Her 49.49m mark in the hammer ranks 19th in the nation. The senior also placed second in the shot put (12.56m).
