Athletes of the Week: Apr. 24-30

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The final Centennial Conference weekly honors of the 2022-23 academic year have been announced as the CC spring championship season wraps up this week. 

Paige Forry of Gettysburg softball leads this week's awards as a four-time Pitcher of the Week this season. Kyle Howard of Gettysburg men's lacrosse, Sydney Wingate of Washington College women's lacrosse, Ethan Hart of Dickinson men's track & field and Darya Mikusova of Dickinson women's track & field also earned repeat AOTW honors this week. 

Other weekly honorees for Apr. 24-30 include Alex Shane and Gabriel Romano of Johns Hopkins baseball, Kate Hart of Swarthmore softball, Matthew Freeman of Franklin & Marshall men's lacrosse, Julia McCann of Ursinus women's lacrosse, Ryan Kredell of Haverford men's track & field, and Kayla Robinson of Haverford women's track & field.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Alex Shane, Fr., OF, Johns Hopkins
Los Angeles, Calif. | Harvard-Westlake School
Shane was scorching hot at the plate in two games for the Blue Jays last week, batting 6-for-7 (.857), with five of those hits going for extra-bases, six runs scored and 7 RBIs. Shane had a career-high five RBIs with a double and a triple in JHU's 22-5 game one win over Gettysburg. In the second game against the Bullets on Friday, Shane cranked two home runs, which was the first multi-homer game of his career. Shane's average now sits at .479 which ranks second in the conference.

Pitcher of the Week
Gabriel Romano, Sr., P, Johns Hopkins
Wading River, N.Y. | Shoreham-Wading River
Romano moved to 8-0 on the season by pitching six, one-hit, shutout innings in an 11-0 win for Johns Hopkins that allowed them to clinch the first seed in the Centennial Conference tournament. Romano struck out five batters and only allowed two base runners during his start. Romano finished the regular season with a 1.77 ERA over 56 IP with 41 strikeouts. Romano has earned wins against three top 15 opponents this season and he is one of five pitchers in the country to have at least eight wins without recording a loss.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week
Kate Hart, Sr., OF, Swarthmore
Pittsburgh, Pa. | Shady Side Academy
Hart batted .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs and 7 RBIs on the week as the Garnet went 4-0 to secure the fifth seed in the Centennial Conference tournament. Hart went 3-for-4 at the plate with two homers and six RBIs in a road win at Franklin & Marshall. She also went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI in a postseason-clinching victory over Muhlenberg earlier in the week.

Pitcher of the Week
Paige Forry, So., P, Gettysburg
Yardley, Pa. | Pennsbury
Forry did not allow a run in 16 2/3 innings pitched on the week. She went 3-0 with two complete games to her credit. Forry struck out 13 on the week, including 10 in a 2-0, 10-inning win at Ursinus on Thursday as the Bullets locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Centennial playoffs. This is Forry's fourth Pitcher of the Week award of 2023. 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Kyle Howard, Sr., A, Gettysburg
Skillman, N.J. | Montgomery
Howard led the Bullets to a massive 26-13 win over Washington College in the regular-season finale on Saturday. He registered career highs of seven goals and 11 points while matching his career best with four assists. He scored both a man-up and man-down goal among his seven and had one ground ball.

Defensive Player of the Week
Matthew Freeman, Sr., FO, Franklin & Marshall
Darien, Conn. | Darien
Freeman went 14-for-22 (63.6%) at the face-off X during the Diplomats' playoff-clinching win at McDaniel. Freeman also collected six ground balls and caused a turnover during the 20-5 victory to secure the No. 5 seed in the CC Tournament for F&M.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Julia McCann, So., M, Ursinus
Audubon, Pa. | Methacton
McCann powered the Bears offense to a pair of wins and their first Centennial Conference Tournament berth since the 2012 season with seven goals, three assists, 21 draw controls and three ground balls in victories over Muhlenberg and Dickinson. She opened the week with four points behind three goals and one assist plus 11 draw controls in the Bears resounding 23-13 win over Muhlenberg on the road. McCann followed that with six points behind four goals and two assists in addition to another double-digit draw control win performance with 10.

Defensive Player of the Week
Sydney Wingate, Sr., GK, Washington College
Pasadena, Md. | Northeast
Wingate went 2-0 with a .586 save percentage and a 6.62 goals against average in two games this past week. On Saturday in an 18-7 win over visiting McDaniel, she turned away 10 shots and gave up just six goals in 48:49 as the Shorewomen secured the four seed and a home conference tournament game in the opening round. On Wednesday, she made seven stops as she did not allow a goal in the final 21:46 of the game, including two saves as WC clinched its 11th straight trip to the Centennial Conference Tournament.
 

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD 

Track Athlete of the Week
Ryan Kredell, Sr., Haverford
Geneva, Ill. | Geneva Community
Kredell ran the third-fastest 5,000 meter time in Centennial history at the Penn Relays on Thursday, crossing the finish line in 13th place. The senior, who has already made history this season, put his name in the Haverford record books once again, running 14:06.89, the fourth-best time in Haverford's illustrious history. He was the top Division III finisher and his time is also good enough to place him ninth in Division III this outdoor season.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Ethan Hart, Jr., Dickinson
New Market, Md. | Linganore
Hart repeated as Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new school shot put record for the second week in a row. Hart recorded a throw of 16.47 meters, besting his toss of 16.37 from last week. The mark ranks second all-time in CC history and 12th on the Division III national list. 

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD  

Track Athlete of the Week
Darya Mikusova, Jr., Dickinson
Niantic, Conn. | East Lyme
Mikusova earned Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this spring after setting a new Dickinson record in the 400 hurdles at the Paul Kaiser Invitational hosted by Shippensburg. Mikusova crossed in 1:01.90, eclipsing the previous school record mark of 1:01.99 set in 2002 by Christine Hufenbecher. The time ranks second in CC history and seventh in the nation this spring. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Kayla Robinson, Sr., Haverford
Bristol, Conn. | The Taft School
Robinson registered school-record and all-time top-10 Centennial marks in both the long jump and triple jump at the Haverford Dual Meet. Robinson jumped 5.67 meters in the long jump to blow her previous school record of 5.38 meters out of the water. With the distance, she is currently 18th in Division III and sixth all-time in CC history. She then returned to the runway to record a program record in the triple jump, posting a mark of 11.46 meters, which ranks eighth all-time in the conference and 35th in the nation.
