Gerry Wixted, Dickinson
Dickinson senior forward Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) has been named the D3hoops.com Men's Basketball National Player of the Year, and selected First-team All-America, announced on Saturday. He becomes the first Centennial Conference player to earn First-team honors on the D3hoops.com team.
Wixted adds this truly prestigious honor to a wagon load of well earned, and well-deserved awards this postseason. He joined three seniors and a sophomore to earn D3hoops.com First-Team All-America honors. Babson sophomore Joey Flannery joined Wixted and seniors Quardell Young (UW-Whitewater), Aaron Walton-Moos (Cabrini) and Jordan Brink (Calvin) on the squad.
He played in the Reese's Division III College All-Star Game on Saturday. Unofficially, he scored 15 points behind five three-pointers, while handing out six assists on the afternoon.
He was named the D3hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Basketball Player of the Year and the NABC Regional Player of the Year, while being selected First-team All-Region, by both organizations. Wixted earned First-team honors after being named to the Second-team in both 2013 and 2014. A four-time All-Centennial Conference selection, Wixted was named First-team for the past three seasons and voted the Centennial Conference Player of the Year, giving Dickinson the honor for the second straight season.
Wixted capped a truly brilliant career with an outstanding stretch of games, leading the Red Devils to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season, and to the "Sweet Sixteen" for the second year in a row. Joined by four other seniors, Wixted will graduate with the most wins of any class in the history of the program, posting 20-win seasons for the past three years. Dickinson set the school record for wins in a season, going 24-7, last season. They repeated that feat this winter with an overall mark of 24-6.
The Red Devils captured the conference championship for the second time in three seasons, posting wins over then, #25-ranked Franklin & Marshall and #11-Johns Hopkins. Wixted was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, scoring 48 points to go with 24 rebounds and six blocked shots, while converting 20-of-21 free throws in the tournament.
Wixted set numerous school and conference records over the course of his career. He became the school's all-time leading scorer for both men's and women's programs, finishing with 1,903 points. He ranks fifth all-time on the conference scoring list and holds the conference record for free throws made with a remarkable 597. He shot 85 percent from the line for his career, also breaking school records with 872 rebounds and 172 blocked shots, while dishing out over 200 assists.
Setting the school single-season record with 539 points this season, Wixted now claims four spots in the program's top-10. He proved to be just as dangerous on the perimeter as in the paint, knocking down 124 three-pointers while shooting 38 percent from long range for his career.
Over the past four seasons, Wixted has helped lead the Red Devils to an overall record of 83 wins and just 33 losses. Dickinson made four appearances in the conference semifinals and three championship appearances, capturing titles in 2013 and 2015. They earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons, advancing to the second round, each year, and to the "Elite Eight" in 2014.
