LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore's Vinny DeAngelo was named Player of the Year while Johns Hopkins' Sidney Thybulle repeated as Defensive Player of the Year to highlight the 2023 All-Centennial Conference Men's Basketball Team. Ursinus' Nick Nocito and the Johns Hopkins coaching staff claimed the other major awards.
Now a three-time All-Centennial pick in addition to the 2020 Rookie of the Year, DeAngelo becomes the second Swarthmore player to receive Player of the Year honors. Former standout Cam Wiley previously won the award for the Garnet in 2017 and 2019. DeAngelo is also now one of just three player in conference history to have won both Player and Rookie of the Year awards along with Franklin & Marshall's Brandon Federici and Johns Hopkins' Conner Delaney. DeAngelo has been stellar for the CC-champion Garnet this winter, ranking in the top-10 of the conference in eight statistical categories with averages of 17.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.0 three pointers per game while shooting 49.2% from the floor, 44.7% from three and 80% from the charity stripe.
Thybulle, a senior forward for Hopkins, was selected as Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. He is the first player to win multiple DPOY honors since the award was formed in 2018. Thybulle does a little bit of everything for the Blue Jays with averages of 6.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.2 blocks and 0.7 steals per contest. Thybulle also repeated as an honorable mention pick on the all-star squad.
Nocito, a freshman guard for Ursinus, was honored as Rookie of the Year. It marks the second time a Bear has garnered top newcomer laurels, with the other going to Malik Draper in 2013. Playing primarily as a reserve this season, Nocito contributed across the board with averages of 8.4 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game with solid percentages from the field, long distance and the free throw line (46.3% FG / 44.7% 3PT / 86% FT).
Johns Hopkins was tabbed as the Coaching Staff of the Year in the inaugural year of the award. Previously, the same award was titled Coach of the Year. JHU head coach Josh Loeffler and assistants Ricky Hernandez and Conor Dow have guided the Blue Jays to a 23-4 record, the top seed and runner-up finish in the CC Tournament and an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason. It marks the second CC coaching honor for Loeffler, who previously won Coach of the Year in 2018.
Franklin & Marshall (31) has the most first-team selections in the history of the conference, followed by Ursinus (22), Johns Hopkins (20), Muhlenberg (18), Gettysburg (16), Dickinson (11), Swarthmore (11), Washington College (7), Haverford (6), and McDaniel (5).
