Shoremen Set Conference Record in 9-0 Win vs. Valley Forge

Brian Wilkinson, Washington College

The Washington College men's soccer team scored all nine of its goals in the first half - breaking a Centennial Conference record - in a 9-0 win over visiting Valley Forge Christian this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The Shoremen (2-1) got a pair of goals early from junior forward Joseph Fili (Sparks, Md./Loyola Blakfield). Fili buried a loose ball into the back of the net from point-blank range at the 5:32 mark and scored again in similar fashion just 20 seconds later. Those back-to-back goals by Fili marked the second-fastest pair of consecutive goals scored by the same player in Centennial Conference history. That record belongs to Muhlenberg's Johan Hohman, who scored twice in 18 seconds against Clark University in 1997.

The Shoremen's conference record-breaking ninth goal of the half came at 43:44 when junior forward Sam Draper (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stole a clearing attempt and scored from 15 yards out to give Washington the 9-0 halftime lead. The previous Centennial Conference record for goals in a half was eight, set by Johns Hopkins in a 12-0 win over Centenary (N.J.) on September 8th, 2002.

The nine Washington goals in the game are tied for the third-most in the team's history, which dates back to 1946, and are the most they have scored in a game since putting up a school-record 18 goals in a shutout of Delaware Valley in 1989. Washington also pinned a 15-1 setback on Maryland-Eastern Shore earlier in the 1989 season. The Shoremen recorded a 9-0 win over Gallaudet in 1988, a 9-1 win over Wagner in 1975, and a 9-0 win over Upsala in 1972.
