LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) won two events and reclaimed a school record while junior Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) also captured a pair of races as the 16th-ranked Gettysburg College men's swimming team completed an undefeated dual-meet season with a 148-111 Centennial Conference (CC) victory at Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday.
It was the fourth undefeated season in six years for the Bullets (9-0, 6-0 CC), who won nine of 14 events while securing the Centennial Conference dual-meet title. It also marked the eighth time the Gettysburg men's swimming team finished undefeated under 32nd-year head coach Mike Rawleigh. In addition, it was Gettysburg's 12th-straight dual-meet victory, dating back to last season.
Parker reset the Gettysburg record in winning the 1,000-freestyle, clocking a 9:44.60 – nearly five seconds faster than the former mark that was just set this past Wednesday by freshman Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin). Parker had previously broken a 14-year-old record in the event last Saturday versus Swarthmore when he swam a 9:51.11 before Leyens eclipsed it four days later.
Parker also prevailed in the 500-freestyle. Dougherty claimed both the 50- and 100-freestyle while contributing to a pair of relay victories.
Gettysburg opened the meet by winning the 200-medley relay, as freshman Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield), Dougherty, freshman Jack Freeman (Haddonfield, N.J./Pennington School), and Leyens won in 1:36.86.
Parker followed up with his record-breaking 1,000. He set a fast pace early and maintained it throughout the race, nearly swimming identical splits (4:52.91-4:51.69). Sophomore Ernie Ribera (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) placed second in 10:33.97.
Leyens then led a 1-2-3 Bullet sweep in the 200-freestyle, touching in 1:46.02. He was followed by sophomore Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./home-schooled) and senior Josh Kiehl (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg), who followed in 1:46.73 and1:48.40, respectively.
The Diplomats (3-6, 2-4 CC) won two of the next three events, though Dougherty led a 1-2 Gettysburg finish in the 100-breaststroke. He won the event in 58.46 while freshman Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) took second in 1:01.06.
Gettysburg would win going away, capturing five of the last seven events. Dougherty (21.82) and sophomore Francisco Nieves (Alexandria, Va./Edison) (22.01) took first and second, respectively, in the 50-freestyle before Sorenson (48.56) and Kiehl (48.86) went 1-2 in the 100-freestyle.
After Dias won the 200-breaststroke (2:16.00), Parker led a 1-2-3 Bullet sweep in the 500-freestyle. Parker was timed at 4:55.53 while Ribera (5:06.69) and Leyens (5:07.65) were second and third.
The Bullets closed the day with a win in the 200-freestyle relay, as Leyens, Sorenson, Nieves, and Dougherty touched in 1:27.95, although the event was exhibitioned.
Other second-place finishes were turned in by Ragatz in the 100-backstroke (55.02), freshman Alex Howard (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) in the 200-butterfly (2:01.55), sophomore Jakob Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) in the 200-backstroke (2:01.88), and Nieves in the 100-butterfly (53.51).
