Hopkins Trio Ready for NCAA Individual Championships

NCAA Release | Singles Bracket | Doubles Bracket | Live Video

Johns Hopkins juniors Joe Cartledge and Austin Gu will compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championship while sophomore Vishnu Joshi earned a spot in the singles championship field. The individual championships will take place May 24-26 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.

For the individual championships, the national committee selected seven singles players and three doubles teams from each of the four regions. Additionally, the committee selected the remaining four singles players and four doubles team berths from a national at-large pool. The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.

The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

Carledge and Gu will take on top-seeded Noah Lilenthal and Adrian Roji of Wesleyan (Conn.) in the first round on Friday.

For Cartledge, this is his second selection for the doubles championship while this is the first for Gu. The duo is the ninth different doubles team from Hopkins to be selected for the championship. Cartledge is the seventh player in program history to be selected twice.

Cartledge and Gu are 13-5 on the season, including a 9-3 record at number one doubles. The pair is ranked fourth in the Atlantic South by the ITA. They are 4-1 against regionally ranked opponents and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Joshi is 10-5 this season, with a 7-2 mark at first singles. He is 4-2 against regionally ranked foes and is ranked third in the region.

Joshi was originally named as the first alternate for singles when the selections were announced on Wednesday, May 8. Two singles players scratched from the tournament earlier this week and Joshi was added to the championship. He is 10-6 in singles this season, including 7-3 in dual matches at the number one spot. Last season, Joshi earned All-America honors after winning his first match at the championships. He then fell in the round of 16 in three sets.

Joshi, who enters the tournament unseeded, will face unseeded Varun Shanker of Caltech in Thursday's first round.
