Two Individuals, Two Doubles Teams Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Two individuals and two doubles teams from the Centennial Conference advanced to the quarterfinal round on Thurday's opening day, while a total of three singles players and two doubles squads earned All-America status at the USTA National Campus. 

In singles action, Johns Hopkins' Thomas Yu and Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with two victories apiece on Thursday. Yu opened the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Derek Hsieh (Chicago) in the round of 32. He then upset seventh-seeded Michael Melnikov of Swarthmore, the top-ranked player in the Atlantic South. Yu won 6-2, 6-2 to earn his spot in Friday's quarterfinal.

Hoegstedt dispatched Andrew Esses of Emory in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) in the first round. In round two, the senior dropped set one before rallying to take the final two sets (6-7(3), 7-5, 6-1) to defeat John Zakowski of Wisconsin-Whitewiter in a battle that lasted two and half hours. In the quarterfinal round, Hoegstedt will square off with Matthew Kandel of Williams College on Friday. The current start time for the match is 9:00 a.m. 

Swarthmore's Melnikov defeated Hamilton's Connor Griff 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round before falling to Yu in the round of 16. He secured All-America status with his spot in the final 16. 

In doubles play, JHU's Thomas Yu and James Yu won their opening match, a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Derek Hsieh and Andrei Leonov of Chicago. The Yus are the first Blue Jay doubles' team to make the quarterfinals since 2012. Thomas Yu is the first player in JHU history to make the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles championship at the NCAAs.

The Swarthmore doubles duo of Melnikov and Utham Koduri bested George Fox's Camden Camacho and Vahag Pashayan 6-3, 7-6. The Garnet pairing will take on Abhi Ramireddy and Phuc Hyunh of Washington University in Friday's quarterfinals. 

Both doubles teams earned All-America recognition with their opening-round victories.
