Thomas Yu, JHU & Swarthmore Doubles Teams Advance to NCAA Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Johns Hopkins' Thomas Yu advanced to the NCAA singles semifinals while a pair of Centennial Conference doubles teams also moved on to the semifinal round on Friday at the USTA National Campus.

Thomas Yu downed top-seeded James Hopper of Case Western in the singles quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-4. Yu will face sixth-seeded Rishabh Sharda of Tufts in Saturday's semis. This is the second straight year and third time overall that a Blue Jay has made the semifinals of the NCAA singles championship, and the sixth time a CC player has made it to the semifinal round. 

In doubles action, the JHU duo of Thomas Yu and James Yu and the Swarthmore tandem of Michael Melnikov and Utham Koduri both made their way into the semifinals. They duos become the fourth and fifth doubles teams to make the semifinal round and the first set of teams to do so in the same season. 

The Yu brothers beat third-seeded Chase Cohen and Matthew Kandel of Williams in the quarterfinals, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. They will take on top-seeded James Hopper and Vishwa Aduru of Case Western in the semifinals. 

Melnikov and Koduri defeated Abhi Ramireddy and Phuc Huynh of Washington University 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The Garnet duo will face Case Western's Diego Maza and Chris Provenzano in the semifinals. 

Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt's run in the singles championship came to an end in the quarterfinals, falling 6-2, 7-6 (6) to Matthew Kandel of Williams. Hoegstedt becomes the first All-American from Washington since Adam Cranford in 2011 and 23rd in program history. Hoegstedt and Andre-Remi Jakobi fell in the opening doubles match to Maza and Provenzano from Case Western.
