Washington College Captures Crown

Haverford 7, Muhlenberg 1
Haverford advanced to the championship round with a 7-1 win over top-seeded Muhlenberg to open the day. Haverford broke through in the bottom of the fifth as it snapped the scoreless tie with four hits and three runs. Jen DiCandilo's two-out RBI-single to right field scored Julie Garlick and Dayle Comerford kept the inning alive by working a walk. Stephanie Wolfson came through with another clutch hit for the Fords as her single through the left side brought Elizabeth Newman and DiCandilo home. After the Mules cut into Haverford's advantage with one run in the top of the sixth, the Fords added four more runs in their half of the sixth to take control of the contest.

Haverford 3, Washington College 1
The Fords forced just the second seventh-game in Conference history with a 3-1 win over the Shorewomen. Sara Tauriello (11-2) gave Haverford another masterful pitching performance as she scattered seven hits over five-plus innings to the top run-producing team in the conference. Tauriello also matched the program record for wins in a season with the victory. Lauren Touey and Kristin Tatum provided the bulk of the offense with two hits apiece. Tatum's double to left field drove Touey home in the the second. The duo then repeated the feat in the fourth as Touey once again got things going with a single through the left side. Tatum struck an RBI-single to center to give the Fords a 2-0 lead. Washington trimmed the Haverford advantage to one with two hits and one run in the sixth but the Fords were not finished. Newman got on base with a two-out single in the top of the seventh and was able to provide an insurance run when Sarah Brody's single to right alluded Lindsey Glascock. Emily Winesett came on with one out in the sixth to earn the five-out save.

Washington College 9, Haverford 0 (5 innings)
Just a year removed from its first-ever win in a conference tournament game, the Washington College softball team captured its first-ever conference championship by defeating Haverford College, 9-0, in five innings in the Centennial Conference Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon at Cedar Creek Field in Allentown, PA. With the win, the Shorewomen (26-17) claim the conference's automatic bid and the school's first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Shorewomen blew open the championship game with an eight-run second inning, scoring seven of those runs with two outs in the frame. Sophomore pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) started the barrage with a one-out double and later came around to score on a single by junior Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School). A bases-loaded, two-out, walk by junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) brought freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) across the plate for Washington's second run. Freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) then hit a bases-clearing three-run double to center to push the lead to 5-0. Jayo scored on a double by junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Catherdal Catholic) and Dockrill scored on an RBI single by sophomore Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) to push the lead to 7-0. Patinella came around to score two batters later on a throwing error to complete the eight-run, seven-hit inning. Cooper got the win for Washington allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out five batters in the five-inning shutout.
