Mules Complete Swat Sweep

Mules Complete Swat Sweep

Kelsey Jones, Muhlenberg

Box Score

The Muhlenberg softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to come from behind for a 5-2 win, at long last completing its season sweep of Swarthmore.

The twinbill, originally scheduled for March 26, was postponed three times before the teams finally played each other on April 7. But they only got one game in that day, with rain halting the first game in the bottom of the fifth with the Mules ahead 6-1.

The second game was played in weather conditions that made it feel like the original date of March 26 - or earlier. Muhlenberg mounted its winning rally with light sleet falling.

With the win, the Mules (15-13, 9-5) remained in the thick of the Centennial Conference playoff race. They are in sole possession of fourth place in the CC, one game ahead of Franklin & Marshall, their opponents on Saturday in their final CC games of the season.

Swarthmore (5-17, 1-11) scored single runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead that stood until the fourth.

Junior Taylor Trifiolis started the rally by drawing a one-out walk. A throwing error on a bunt by junior Alexis Giovinazzo put runners on first and second, and when sophomore Courtney Simon was hit by a pitch for the school-record-tying sixth time this season, the bases were loaded.

One out later, senior Alyssa Schell singled sharply up the middle to bring home two runs and tie the game. A single down the right-field line by junior Nicole Iannarone plated Simon with the go-ahead run. After Iannarone stole second, junior Amie DeFeo (pictured above) dunked a single into right field for two more runs.

After senior Kelsey Jones retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, the game was called because the Garnet had an injured player and no one to substitute for her.

It was the third time this season the Mules scored at least five runs in their last at-bat for a come-from-behind win.

Jones pitched a complete game for her 10th win of the season and the 50th of her career.
